Um ... I guess I was just being tidy-minded, keeping it all at the top and resisting splitting it throughout the thread.

I have suggested to BerlinBob that this thread be 'stickied' on the NZ board so everyone can continue adding historical and local events where it's easy to find. Of course everyone can also contribute to the 'main' RootsChat Time Line by dropping a line to BerlinBob:

Yeah, feel free to replace the first child births with Tangiwai or Wahine.
The first families on ACTIVE (our Mayflower) is fairly important though.

Congratulations Koromo !
Yes, this will certainly be a most worthwhile addition to the "stickies".

Thank you Lucy. I was beginning to wonder!

Damnit Zephyr!! Hey, I'm just yer average RootsChat member who thought that everyone contributing to a NZ timeline was a good idea! Have a look at the first post which I have continued to edit to try to include everyone's suggestions:
1814 Rev Samuel Marsden & 'first families' arrive in NZ to set up mission at Bay of Islands, New Zealand 1815 First european birth in NZ (Thomas Holloway King, died young), New Zealand 1815 First female european birth in NZ (Dinah Hall, returned to Sydney aged 7), New Zealand 1817 First european born in NZ who lived her whole life in the country (Hannah King), New Zealand
I was trying to be as succinct as possible, taking into account that many readers of the 'world' timeline will not have a clue about specific NZ history. I will include the name of the ship!
And now I will confess that I'd never heard of the Active before. It wasn't covered in my fifth form School Certificate history curriculum ... well, if it was, I'm sorry I've forgotten it.
Cheers all Koromo

Hi All
Mmmm .... just a few thoughts.
Now forgive me if I got this wrong, but I rather thought this timeline was (initially) being created to provide "dates of importance/or of interest, to researchers of family history in New Zealand" ?
So isn't it veering more towards "general history", when, for example, an item is included about such and such a bridge or building, being opened on such and such, a date ? (Remember, we have that wonderful "Google" tool at hand, as a means of gathering "this other" information).
And ... will ongoing contributions to this thread, see it stretch out to 10 ... 20 pages, thus making it a chore or a bore, to wade through ?
* Is it better that this timeline, be a "short-sharp read" ? * Restricted say, to 2 pages, (max.) ? * And perhaps also be, a "locked topic" ?
Lu [currently, ducking for cover )

A couple of questions/suggestions......
Is it necessary to have "New Zealand" in full at the end of every item? If you just had "NZ", that would save an awful lot of characters....
OR Why can't we have 2 posts? eg. "up to 1899" & "1900-1999"
B.
Yes! When I started I thought to make it as easy as possible for BerlinBob to include it in the 'world' timeline, so added his County and Catalogue entries. If he stickies the thread I will take out all the extraneous New Zealands and ideally it would be good if he could add another post underneath the present first one so the list could be split sensibly and they follow on, if you see what I mean! Don't know yet if he can do that.
'Tis late now here. Will be in touch tomorrow.
Cheers Koromo
