Cannot get any further back with Daniel Crawthorne than 1877 when he was married by cert to Sarah Trowbridge at Radford Reg Office. He was a soldier who on later censuses shows he was born in Nottingham and who's father was also Daniel Crawthorne (deceased by 1877). Can find no Daniel Crawthornes or variants (Craythorne, Craythorn, Crayton..) on ancestry or bmd. From his age on later censuses he was born around 1845. Can any one help me please!!!?

Hi Toz
Could this be him
I have found a Daniel Crawthorne in the 1861 census age 18 at Chatham Barracks. Private in Army. He gives his birth place as Ramsey, Hants.
There is nothing showing for him on the Notts FHS bapts CD or on the BIVRI

Ditto for 1871
Still a private but now at Clarence Barracks, Portsmouth aged 28. Gives his birth place as Ramsey, Huntingdonshire.

Thank you SOOOO much!!! You may just have solved my problem. Whilst he says on later census returns he's from Nottingham..I can't help but think it must be him (he doesn't seem entirely sure on the two census returns you found, does he?) I have spent so long looking on ancestry, looking at all spelling variants and mistranscribed possibilities..thank you again. Any Lincolnshire stuff I can do for you..please ask Regards Toz

Hi Toz
Found in 1851 a Daniel Cawthorn (looks like Crawthorn on image) aged 7 in Oundle Union Workhouse, birthplace given as Oundle Northamptonshire.
Free bmd, Birth Mar 1844 V15 p353 Oundle Northamptonshire/Huntingdonshire Daniel Slater Cawthorne.
I also have a soldier (William Wood) married in Norwich St Giles but later found out from his army record that he was born in Essex. You may find some useful information from his army record if you can get hold of it.

Hi Toz
If you search under Cawthorn/Cawthorne you will find many entries in Nottingham on Free bmd, also try the Free Reg on the home page.
Familysearch also have Nottingham entries, so at least you know that there are more of the variable Crawthorne name. I suppose it could have been spelt many different ways.
