... They came in boxes with bundles or rolls.

you have to wade through many documents reading the text to find the one you want ...

These are not downloadable, though you could pay the Nat Archives for a copy

Hmmmm. I recently received an estimate from Nat Archives for a 1759 Probate inventory, or declaration, of the estate of the same, deceased, with account to be digitally copied and supplied on disk. They said there were 39 pages (sized A2/A3) and it would cost £185. I can't get rid of the nagging feeling that the 39 pages is for a bundle(?) of papers which might include other people's records as well. I've queried it but the person at the end of the email said "we do not have access to the documents here so I am unable to look for you."

So it's out of the question — pity!

Thanks Stonechat - it certainly looks like I'll need to spend a lot of time at the NA next time I'm in town.

I'm sure that they have far more information than I could ever read in a lifetime - but it would be a fantastic experience.

Koromo - The £185 sounds rather steep but if the results opened up some firmly locked doors - maybe, just maybe  Undecided I'd think about it - but I must admit that I'd have to be pretty desperate  Roll Eyes

Thanks

185 pounds!!!   Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked  My goodness, the National Archives sounds as though it is really cashing in on the family history craze!!  Shocked Shocked

I needed some 19th century Chancery documents, and know that it is a long and complicated process, though.  As I'm on the other side of the world, I hired a London-based researcher to look for them.  She found them and summarised/transcribed them - they were lengthy, and I didn't need to have every last word of legalese transcribed!  Her charges were reasonable, certainly far less than 185 pounds!!!

Koromo, have you thought about the option of getting a researcher to look at them for you?  It could be worthwhile!

Hi MarieC and Di

No, I hadn't considered a using a researcher. The person whose record I wanted is not in my direct line, but I had hoped that it might contain clues to other family members. Getting the record is not critical ... yet!

Thanks for the suggestion. If I can't get to London/Kew over the next year or so (or win the lottery!), I may well use such a researcher.

Cheers
