Robert Haggett 1835 - 1916
107 Galgate, Barnard Castle

Just received a death cert for 1933, place of death as above. Registered by G H Warnes, occupier, same address.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this address? I wondered if it was the workhouse. Googled but have found nothing.

Workhouses legally ceased to exist on Monday 31st March 1930. Smiley
but the Workhouse was on Galgate and included a separate infirmary and infectious ward.

There is now a Community Hospital on the site. Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a post code search on DL128GD, this will centre the map on the site of the workhouse which you will see on the earlier maps.

Institutions such as prisons, workhouses, or psychiatric hospitals have alternative addresses which are used when someone is born or dies in them.
