HI David,

Isn't there a difference between Mothering Sunday and Mother's Day?

Looking at google it seems Mothering Sunday which started hundreds of years ago was all about the people attending the "mother church" and not their little local one?

Whereas the Mother's Day holiday that we celebrate today is actually for "mother's" and was started for mother's in the USA.

And NZ usually follow UK but we celebrate it second Sunday in May along with US, Canada, Australia, India and a list of others.....

Had a lovely day, walk in the botanic gardens after church and then house full of family, plied with lots of cuppas ..tea and coffee.  Purchased a new coffee machine a week ago, so drinking a bit more coffee. ( harking back to that subject, we hated the whitener in US and Canada and with all the topups of the cup flowing freely drank mostly black )The new machine does all the frothy milk, and the smell of freshly ground beans nice.

Coming up 7am Monday morning now here so must finish cuppa and and get ready to head out the door.

Well after taking my middle daughter to the Irish Dance Feis yesterday morning, then attending the first race of the season with our race car, so in total I think I drove about 350 kms, woke up at 5:30 am got to bed about 3:00 am, might have been earlier, but my father in law got his motorhome & trailer stuck in the mud so had to wait to get them unstuck and I just got home an hour ago, I think I'm just going to hide in my room and go to sleep  Grin

Of course, I called my mum who lives 6 hours from me and I took my mother in law 2 lovely hanging baskets this morning, she had my 3 girls for the night  Smiley

In the Anglican church, Mothering Sunday (which the shops exploit and call Mothers Day) ... is always the middle Sunday of Lent, the six weeks before Easter.  So this year it was very early, other years its late ... a moveable feast !!

Just read about the Irish dancing there Karen, My girls had 10 years of it at competitions here and Aus. Qualified for the worlds but didn't go  Sad partly due to expense. Oldest daughter 30 this year is back at it for fitness just doing the figure dancing and exhibitions. So we still get to the feis when we can but not carrying boxes of necessary supplies now  Smiley

Wow Mare that's awesome!!

Clare is 6 and just started last July, she absolutley loves it!  This was her 2nd Feis and she got 1st place for her hop jig, 3rd place for her reel, 2nd place for her slip jig and and 1st place with her partner in the 2 hand reel.  She has only been dancing with the soft shoes, but starts to learn the hard shoes next week so I had to buy a pair  Shocked

LOL, since she is still young and a beginner I think I'm getting off pretty easy right now, but I seen all the mother's there with all sorts of supplies and stuff.  I saw the prices of the solo dressess, oh my, beautiful, but the expense, wow.

The name Mothering Sunday has over recent years gradually changed to Mothers Day.  It is the same day, just the idea has moved away from the original concept.  I thought the visiting the mother church crept in as the practice of fasting during lent diminished and turned into the symbolic idea of foregoing a luxury.

Now nearly everyone treats it as the day that mother should be visited, taken out to lunch, given presents etc.

I'm having a fabulous day!...When not working am being treated royally...Couldn't ask for more! My son helped make supper, which made it taste ever better than when I do it!
Yes, aghadowey, do hope your youngest is alright!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think the card and gift places have for the most part come up with the occassions we celebrate...I don't care if I get gifts, though...Lots of love and hugs and the odd meal out and I'm happy as a pig in poo...
I have dug & watered tons of flowerbed, and can feel the sun has been on my face...
Couldn't ask for a nicer day...and am running back out to do more.
Who knows, tomorrow it may snow...
p.s. for those of you who may think me a bad person for working Sundays, I usually do a minimum on the "day of rest"...but I am sorry, if the Lord can't give me a nice enough May, I 'll take the window of opportunity while I can...while the sun shines...
My back aches terribly when I do this on the cold days... Roll Eyes
No idea why today is Mother's Day in Canada and the U.S. - but is is shown on the calendars.  Had a great Mother's Day pancake breakfast at the community club - an annual affair my son is involved in.  Daughter phoned from B.C. & she and family sent me a gorgeous azalea.  Can enjoy that for weeks.
Pre-celebration last night with a steak & shrimp dinner at  son and family's home.  Yes, am one of those spoiled mothers.
Hope all the mothers on this list had a great day.
As for working on a Sunday, what would our families have
done when our babies and children needed changes, food,
etc. if we Mothers had said, "Sorry, can't do it on a Sunday"?
As for my garden, I figure that if Mother Nature can work
there on a Sunday, I can too.      Grin Grin
Good point Kathleen... Grin It would have made for a good excuse, but can you imagine the mess? Somehow mother's duties are never considered "work" unless others are doing the job...But then, I guess I never really though of it as work either....stinky...tiring at times...but not really work...
Wow, Mare & Karen...Sounds as thought he gals are super dancers..Such a wonderful thing to have them doing....Great exercise as well!
Got some much needed rain...Nice to not have the precip  in solid form!  Roll Eyes  J.J.
Hi All:
Yes that rain in the Peg was sure appreciated.  A bit of heat and things should green up quickly.
Terrible disasters around the world with tornadoes  to the south, earthquakes, cyclones, etc.  Grateful  to be in a relatively safe spot.  The garden centres are going full force, but still a bit early to plant outside.  Thousands of Canadian Geese about this area.
