Thomas Hall in New York
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 10:56 BST (UK) »

Hi,
I have a testement from the New York Bible Society with the following inscription inside," A present to Thomas Hall at New York on the 4th April 1870",
Thomas was born in Westmorland, UK in 1841 and was on the 1861 & 1871 UK Cencus's,
I have found 3 Thomas Halls on Castlegarden for entry into the US,
Thomas Hall, Age 25, 26th April 1866 on the     City of Boston,
Thomas Hall, Age 26,  29th July 1866  on the     Denmark,
Thomas Hall  Age 26,  7th January 1870 on the Constantine,

Where do i go from here?

Regards Brian,

Any idesa of Thomas' occupation? It looks as though he might only have been in U.S. a short time. Have you looked for him in 1870 U.S. census as he might have been recorded then? Must have been a connection with N.Y. Bible Society (assume they didn't just go handing out inscribed Bibles to everyone)- have you tried checking in a search engine like Google to see what the organisation was and if it still exists? If Thomas was some sort of minister or missionary and was in U.S. on some sort of tour there might have been something reported in the N.Y. newspapers.

The Bible Society still exists internationally and would be  in NY  but it may be under a slightly different name. googling for Bible Society and USA might produce what you want.

Had a quick look in 1870 census on Ancestry- putting in Thomas Hall born 1841 +/-2 years in New York State and at least 3 possibilites: one in Niagara Co., Orange Co. & Saint Lawrence Co.
If he was in New York State rather than City he could have first arrived in Canada and then travelled to U.S.

Interesting link but this Bible has an inscription. Perhaps not actually presented by the Bible Society?
Think we do need Thomas' occupation. If he was a mariner he'll be unlikely to appear in 1870 census.

Hi all and thanks for the reply's,

On the 1861 UK Cencus,Thomas was the son of a farmer who had 400 acres of land,so i would think he would be classed as a farm labourer although the minister thought is very interesting,

From the 1870s untill his death,he was a farmer,
