Surname Dusolei
« on: Friday 18 July 08 10:25 BST (UK) »

Have I got Huguenots ? What is more baffling is what happened to this name ?
My great grandmother Jane Phillips born 1843 in Chelsea to James Phillips and Jane nee Dusolei. Their marriage  in Soho 1824 is found on IGI.  Also if Dusolei is entered as a wildcard 14 entries appear including siblings of Jane, and another family which may or may not be related. By the 1841 census the surname is not found at all. The original pronunciation was Dew Sol Lay, spelt Du Soleil ( of the sun ). By 1790s the last 'L' has been dropped and by 1841 the London pronunciation may be Dewsall, but I find no evidence of this. Anyone got any ideas ?

Thanks Shaun for the reply. Unfortunately I have known about the 1st one for some time. As you see the post is exactly 4 yrs old today. The person who posted it is obviously a relative, but twice I have sent e-mails and received no reply.  Regards Roy

Hi Roy

Sorry for the late reply, I've been away from the boards for the school summer holidays.

Would you like me to check out the 1824 marriage or do you have the witnesses names already?

Hi Dawn, I found the marriage on IGI and have no details other than the place. Thomas Dusolei comes from an entry on ancestry. com. So if you have access to other sources please go ahead and check. thanks Roy

Do you have this family?

1841 Peter and Susanha Dusoui HO107/675/2 Folio 6 Page 4
1851 Peter and Susannah Dusoler HO107/1488 Folio 215 Page 24

Death - Peter Dusolie December 1852 Marylebone Vol 1a Page 260
Death - Susan Dusolie March 1856 Marylebone Vol 1a Page 276

There are a few marriages on the IGI, but no children of these marriages to follow forwards , records not transcribed yet? If they had mainly girls maybe the name died out in England  Undecided

Thanks Cat. No I hadn't found those, but then I wouldn't have been looking for a Peter. Thomas Dusolei had 3 daughters who all married 1824. only one son John born 1798. couldn't find him 1841, either died before or mis-transcribed in 1841. But I will take a look at your find.  Regards, Roy
