Cloth-making terms
« on: Friday 18 July 08 13:14 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know a good website for looking up terms and expressions used in [historical rather than modern] textile and cloth making?  I particularly want to know whether someone who produced worsted coatings produced worsted for making coats, or whether he produced a substance for coating worsted yarn.

Thanks in advance

Worsted Coatings was a fabric for the mens' coating trade. James Bottomley 1816-88 pioneered the manufacture of worsted coatings at his Westbank Mills, Bradford.

This is the site for the Clothworkers Company.

You should find all the relevant terms you want on this.

Thanks for the link.  It didn't answer the coatings question but it does answer lots of others.
