Anyone going to Lancs/Mcr record office?
« on: Friday 18 July 08 21:08 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone could look up a birth/death for me at the records office - not sure whether it would be Manchester or Preston.

I have found a couple of unknowns in my family tree and am keen to know how they fit in.  They are a bit of a mystery so any details from their death certs, birth certs might be useful

They are Gerard Sweeney, born "Prestwich",  March quarter 1923, died in Swinton March/April 1931.
and
Joan Cadman born 1899 died September/October 1965 probably in Chorlton on Medlock.

If I could pin down their respective parents it would clear up the mystery.

A long shot I know, but if anyone out there can offer some help I would be very grateful  Smiley

Many thanks

No-one can just look at certificates.  You have to buy them at £7 each.  To find out the names of the parents of the people you mentioned and the full date of birth you need the birth certificates.

I couldn't see a birth for Joan Cadman in Lancashire, presumably that was her married name.

You may already have these details.

Birth reference for Gerard Sweeney, Jan-Mar 1923 Prestwich 8d 472, the maiden name of his mother is shown as Sweeney, which might suggest that she was unmarried. (Maiden names are shown on searches for births from end of 1911).

Death reference for Gerard Sweeney, Apr-June 1931 Barton I 8c 547.  If you buy that death certificate, it might have his mother with a married name, but it's only a chance, but if you don't already know it will show cause of death.

Death reference for Joan Cadman, Oct-Dec 1965 Manchester 10e 56. aged 66.  If Cadman was her married name, the only information you'll get, apart from cause of death is the name of the informant, who may well be her husband.

From this you can look for a marriage for him and link it up to a Joan.  That will give her maiden name.  Or you could buy the marriage certificate which should give the name of her father.  You may then be able to find her on the 1901 census with her father and her mother, so that you'll know her mother's Christian name.  You could then repeat the procedure and look for a marriage between her father and a lady with her mother's Christian name.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Lizzie

Thank you so much for the information - on the face of it Gerard may well have been an illegitimate child.  I will send off for the birth certificate to see what that throws up.  There is no obvious mother (no correct name anyway) in my family tree, but my money is on the Joan buried in the same grave as being Gerard's mother.  I had a second cousin who used to tease my mother with tales of "an actress" in the family - perhaps this is the elusive Joan!  And I suspect she wasn't actually an actress either ...   I can hear the skeletons rattling in the family tree!!

Thanks once again for your help  Smiley

Hi Veronica

It did occur to me that Gerard Sweeney sounds a very Irish name.  Do you think Joan Cadman, if she was originally Joan Sweeney was born in Ireland?
