Research in France?
« on: Friday 18 July 08 23:22 BST (UK) »

I have done research before but I've never had to find any information from France and I noticed France isnt listed  in the areas of Interest.
I am helping a friend who is trying to find a birth certifcate for David Rattray Caird who was born in Saint Germain de Livet in Normandie on the 19th June 1851 and also to find if he had any brothers or sisters born in France. (He did marry in Scotland in 1870)

His father was James Caird and she would like to discover if he died in France.
Be very grateful for any help/suggestions.

Hello,
I currently work in the archives in France and have friends who do lots of genealogical research. They have recommended that a good place to start would be local family history societies. Normandy has several departements which include:
Normandie :

orne : http://www.cgmp-genealogie.net/
         http://www.orne-perche.com/
         http://www.perche-gouet.net/

calvados : http://www.cegecal.org

manche : http://www.cgpf35-fougeres.org

seine-maritime : http://site.voila.fr/agpb7660/
                      http://www.rouengenealogie.org/

I think Saint Germain de Livet is in Calvados.

All the best,

Pip

Have you found him on Scottish censuses - and looked for other Cairds b. France there?
Also www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk mentions an overseas index (similar to the GRO overseas indexes?) on which he might be found.

As you have a place and exact date, it's also possible to write to the Mairie (town hall) and ask for a copy of his birth act, if he was recorded in the local civil registrations.
http://www.cclisieuxpaysdauge.fr/modele.php?ref=4&categ=151&page=399&cdc=true
 - they appear to have an email address, you might try contacting that first.

Also if you know the father's occupation, that will help in working out why they were there, how long they are likely to have stayed, etc.

Hi Pip and Jerose
It's so kind of you both giving up your time to help me. I do have one BIG drawback here with this research I dont know the French language.
Would it be possible to write my request in English or in your opinion, would it be better to have it translated into French before sending any emails etc?
I have already tried Scotlandspeople.org and have found several Cairds but not the correct ones. (I'm still searching for their overseas index cant seem to find it?)
I do know that David did come back to Scotland and he was married in Dundee (1870)when he was 19yrs old. His mother's death is registered in Dundee 1857, but re David's  father, James, as yet I cant find any records relating to him in Scotland which makes me believe he may well have died in France.
I do know that they went to France either to work or teach jaquard weaving. My friend seems to be sure that they were in Normandie but I will try Calvados as well.
Once again my sincere thanks for all the links you have given me they will be a great help.
Regards

Hi Emmy,

have you seen this

You might find a few tips there, too.

Good luck,

I have found what I believe is a link to David Caird  in France but I cant get any further into this site because I dont have a subscription to it.  If someone has a subscription to this site to check the document for me I would be very grateful. Don’t think this information will be on Ancestry.
This is the link, the ones I'm interested in is 1851-1851 that says Stranraer and the one above it. As yet I don’t know what it relates to but I think it could be something to do with some of the family returning to UK from France.
Be grateful for any help or suggestions what this document is.
Emmy

I sent an email to the Mairie on Saturday and I had a reply today from what I gather I have to write to another address. I was surprised and pleased I received a reply so quickly.
