Johanna Purcell where are you???
« on: Friday 09 October 09 15:55 UTC (UK) »

Would anybody please be able to help?

I have been researching Johanna Purcell b1895 in Clonmel (she was a twin) for a few years now. I had hoped that when the 1911 census came on line I would be able to locate her but NO she cannot be found.  I have also checked the 1911 census for England and she is not on there either (she married in England in 1921 I have the cert).

I think I have found her mother (a widow) and brother on the 1911 census.  I would be grateful if anybody could locate her maybe I have overlooked her on the census.

Many thanks brads

Where did you find the possible mother and brother? What was mother's name.? Have you searched the index to civil registrations for Johanna - might get her parents names from this.

Hi Anna, thank you for your reply.  Her parents were Thomas and Mary (nee Slattery). her twin brother was Mathew. In 1911 her mother and brother were living at 13 Kickham Row Clonmel with the Dunn family. mary is noted as the aunt and is a widow.

I have the family together on the 1901 census so this means Thomas died between 1901 and 1911. However on the marraige cert I have for Johanna in 1921 it does not note that hyer father is deceased.

Thank you again for your help brads

I think this is a strong possibility - St Joseph's School/Orphanage Clare st Limerick is showing a Johanna Purcell age 15 born Tipperary. See census image

Hi Again,

Thank you for the image.   I notice that Johanna is only age 12 on the image,  mine would be 16.

I am wondering if she would have been working for somebody and has been missed on the census or mistranscribed?

It is a 15 not a 12 if you look closely at it. I checked the whole of the country for a J Purcell and this is the only likely one. It is doubtful that she was missed.

Do you know if there is anyway that I could clarify if it is her?

Also do you know if I can locate death records for Ireland online?  I would like to find Thomas' death record?

Thanks brads

Index to civil registration is online (free) and covers the period you need to check Thomas' death:

Brads

Forgot to say there could be mistranscriptions so it is not definite just a possibility.
You could try the Archivist at the Good Shepherd Convent Clare St Limerick. I suggest you write sending a SAE and probably?? a small donation. You should also clarify your relationship as they will be unwilling to give information unless assured you are a descendant or near relative.
Hope this is of use
