Just returned from fantastic Iceland, where I discovered that their first census was taken in 1703! It contained names, ages and social positions, and the information is still available today, although some of the original documentation is missing. I believe this census was taken to allow the Danes to check on the population, which was under their rule for several centuries.
What wouldn't I give for a census of this age to help me with my frustrating English relatives!
