Why was this letter kept?
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 09:47 BST (UK) »

In the family archives I've found this letter and I can't translate it. The address to give you some guidance is 26 Plasturton Gardens , Canton (still there went to see it about three weeks ago!

Hi,

Just a thought but it appears to have a black band around the front page, could it be a notification of a death? It was quite traditional to send out a card with a black band round the edge. The card would state the death of a person and tell of funeral arrangements.

I’ll have a closer look at the letter now.

Regards,

Emma

Yes it definitely does have a black edge.

Well that would explain why it was kept but not what it says. I think I could read it but when I zoom in the image is too pixelated. (Not sure if that’s a word, I mean it brakes up when I zoom in.)

Is there any way you could scan the image or take a photo closer, even take a picture of just half a page at a time? It’s that nice flowing writing that looks lovely but all merges together and makes it difficult to read. Can you see anybodies name that stands out – if so that might be the name of the person who has died.

The black edged paper might signify a recent death in the family, but it was also commonly used following the death of the king or queen . . . most notably Queen Victoria.
