Ten pound occupier - Oxford Street
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 23:20 BST (UK) »

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if someone can explain the term 'Ten pound occupier and householder'?  I have an ancestor who lived in a dwelling house on Oxford Street in Leicester and this has been taken from the electoral register entry for 1872.

Was this a sign of wealth or status in society at the time?

I presume it was the worth of his land and house, but would I be correct in assuming that?

Thanks for looking

Hi SJ Detective,

Just a very quick reply, (I should be doing something else!!). I think this  was to do with the right to vote. At one time men had to be householders and pay a minimum rent. If you google '1832 reform act' I think that will help you.

Best wishes

I thought that but the 1832 act seems to suggest a fifty pound limit.  I think this was removed by the second reform act in 1867 when anyone who paid rates or had over fifty pounds in savings could register to vote.
