John Punter b Congleton abt 1825

I have been looking for anything on John Punter, who, according to his Marriage Cert in Australia was born in Congleton, Cheshire in about 1825.  I know that he came to Australia as a convict in 1849 having been sentenced in Chester in 1848.  His death certificate lists his father as John Punter and his father's occupation as School Teacher.   All searches to date have failed to find any further information on either of these Johns.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kathy

Do you know who provided the information on your John's death certificate... because sometimes you need to take these detail with a rather large grain of salt.   Unless the person who gave the details knew the deceased incredibly well.......... and perhaps was familiar with the deceased parents or siblings...... then it can sometimes be a bit misleading.

Have you much detail on John's conviction and transportation?  Is there anything in amongst those records that might help pinpoint his birthplace or parents??

Sorry if you have already considered all these options........... but it never hurts to ask  Grin

The information on the death certificate was supplied by one of his sons and his wife was still alive at the time but it is still difficult to know whether the information is 100% accurate or not.  He was arrested once in Australia and told a pretty tall story so he may have been prone to embellishing the truth a little. 

I have all the information I can get on his transportation but have not yet tried to get a copy of his court proceedings from Chester.   I just thought it was worth a try to see if anyone else had any information on them.

Hi Kathy,
             My records show the same as yours. John Punter and Margaret Plunkett are my wifes 2X greats. I have them being married here where we live in Ipswich Qld in 1853 but have been unable to get a certificate. Did you get it from NSW or Qld please, and can you supply the reference Nos. Both places have replied to me as unable to find. On Elizabeth Ann's birth certificate John was born Congleton Cheshire C 1825, can't find that either. Elizabeth Ann was born Dalby Qld 4th August 1867. If you find anything on John birthwise, I would love to hear from you.
