1841 Census Abingdon Help Please
« on: Sunday 20 July 08 17:05 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

I've not ventured into this County before, but I believe I may have found a gr gr grandfather of my husbands, William Richard Ostley.  He states on various census in Canada that he was born in England c1838.

I have found a William Richard Ostler born 1838 in Abingdon J/F/M.  I've tried to find him on the 1841 but have had no luck.

When I went though to trawl through all Williams born in Abingdon I couldn't find any in the 1841, no reference to Abingdon at all.

So, my question is, is it available?

He states he came to Canada in 1853.

Thanks for any and all help.

Hi Karen  Cheesy

According to genuki, http://www.brazell.net/genuki/BRK/Abingdon/index.html

Quote
ABINGDON, comprises the two parishes of St. Helen, and St. Nicholas

Both parishes come up in 1841 but I can't see William  Undecided

Hi Karen

You also need to know that the Abingdon on the birth registration reference is Abingdon registration district which covers over 30 different parishes - you can see a list of them here -

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/abingdon.html

That birth could have taken place in any of them

Thanks for the information Debbie.

Perhaps I can find some clue here in Canada, obit., death certificate that might help me in pinpointing him down in the UK.

His granddaughter is still alive, she just turned 96 last week.  Perhaps she might know something.  She still has her wits about her, altough she kept telling my husband she had a picture of him riding a pig, but it was really her brother/hubby's grandfather  Smiley

Hi Karen

I think I have found him    Grin

Ostley is a very uncommon name,  the only  mention in the whole of the Berks burial index I have is the buriel of Henry Ostley aged 11m in 1844 in Appleton.  On checking the Appleton transcripts,  the only other mention of the name is a marriage in 1835 Oct 26th
Henry Ostley of Tubney to Mary Green of Marcham.

Tubney is part of Fyfield parish and in the transcripts for Fyfield I found the baptism Jan 28th 1838 William Richard s/o Henry & Mary Ostley of Tubney - lab

They also had John 1836, Naomi 1837, Sarah 1839, Ann 1840, Bessy 1842 and Henry 1843  All baptised with the Surname Ostley,  however if you want to find the family in the census they appear to be listed as Horsley and Henry (the father) was baptised as Henry Horsley s/o Richard & Sarah 6th May 1810 in Fyfield.  All other earlier metion of this family seem to be under the surname Horsley.

I hope this makes sense,  it helps to explain why they have been so hard to track down.

Wow Debbie, this is great!!

What's really interesting is on the birth of William Richard Ostley first son in 1870 here in Canada, is that I found it under Horsley.

Thanks so much.

Abingdon is still in the Archdeaconry of Berkshire so parish records remain in the Berkshire Record Office, or in the case of St Helens, at the church.

Trouble is here, that the person who was asking doesn't seem to have answered yet.  I did ask if they had the 1851 census for Abingdon, and sent the MI for Tubney but no response at all!.
