« on: Monday 03 August 09 12:06 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell me what an engine man is? My 4th grt grandfather, John Crozier b.1798 Coxlodge. Durham. was described thus in the 1851 England census.
I would be glad of your help.

He probably looked after the stationary (steam) engine which pulled the cages up the main shaft.

or if the pit had a rail line running to take the coal away it could also be a stationary engine that hauled the trucks up an incline to link up with a rail network.try googleing bowes railway it will show incline rope haulage.

Hi

It can be either of the previous two definitions. Also it can be an underground job, in charge of a stationary engine at the pit bottom.

Here's one definition, although I think it is limited:

Quote
In charge of colliery winding machinery under the direction of the Bankman

Usually (but not in all cases) the former would be refered to as a winding engineman; and of course the winding engineman would be under the direction of a banksman. The banksman being stationed at the various levels where the cage stops can see what is actually happening and very accurately direct the engineman when to stop, lower or raise the cage. The engineman sits in a large room at the top of the shaft with only his controls and a pointer to indicate some approximation of where the cage is in the shaft.

Thanks for all these definitions of engineman.  I like to think my 4th grt Grandpa operated the engine at the pit head  -  had to have been better than down below!!
Thanks one and all.

The Banksman was on the surface of the mine, there were 'Onsetters' located at levels - at some of the levels but not necessarily all of them, depending upon the pit.  There would be signalling systems from the surface and from each level to the winding engineman and also from the surface to each level.

The position of the cages in the shaft was generally indicated by means of a pointer rotating against a large dial, the pointer being mecahnically connected to the winding drum but in addition there were generally marks on the edge of the winding drum which could be lined up against a fixed pointer.  Using the two the winding engineman was able to position the cage to an accuracy of two or three inches at the levels

Regarding an engineman working underground there could be fixed hauling engines at locations that were a considerable distance from the shaft bottom.

One of the main functions of pit engines was to pump water out of the pit workings.

Re the engines underground.

All I know is that after a permanently disabling accident at the coal face, my father became an engine man at the pit bottom.

Although he arranged for friends of ours to go down the mine when they were allowing visitors, he wouldn't arrange for his two daughters to go because he didn't want us to see the conditions under which he had worked. He died in 1986 and I've still not been down a mine.

Apologies - of course you are right, I'm getting my banksmen and onsetters confused - it's been a long time.
