Tom Horsfall, Darlington, early 20th century
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 11:49 UTC (UK) »

I am seeking any information about a brother of my paternal grandmother: TOM HORSFALL and his wife CLARA (nee Pickles) - recorded in the 1911 census in Darlington. Tom was an undertaker. He was born in Whitworth, near Rochdale, Lancs in 1881. Clara, whose maiden name was Pickles (born Todmorden) was about six years older than her husband. One son was recorded in 1911 - Frederick James Horsfall, born 1908
For any information about this family I would be most grateful
Best wishes from Cornwall

hi ian,
have had a look and have found the following:-
IRENE HORSFALL born in 1920 in todmorden 9a 417 thought this might be a connection as there were links in todmorden
there is also the following 2 births and have put these down as halifax is very close to todmorden.
HILDA HORSFALL born 1929 in halifax 9a 582
JOYCE HORSFALL born 1932 in halifax 9a 469

they all have mothers maiden names as pickles you would only know if they connected if y ou acquired the birth certificates so i have given you the references.

Hi Sharon -
I can't thank you enough for finding these births - as you say, the mother's surname, Pickles, means that these three were all daughters of my grandmother's brother Tom and his wife Clara. Now the possibility arises that sometime after 1911 Tom and family moved away from Darlington - unless (less likely) Clara had gone back to her native turf to have her children. I shall now start looking for these Horsfalls in the Todmorden area.
One oddity, which I will have to investigate: if Clara was born c 1875, and Joyce (whom you discovered) was born 1932 ... then Clara was one old mum! I'll start now by going back to verify Clara's details.
Interestingly enough, I have traced my Horsfall line back to the late 1600s in Todmorden; Tom's great grandfather was the first of the Horsfalls to leave Todmorden to take on a farm in Whitworth, just north of Rochdale
Again, many thanks for this information - and good luck with your own research
