Gilchrist Lookup - Please help!

Hi,

Am looking at whether the Gilchrist (surname variance's could have them as Gilchriest/kilchrist/Killchrist) family were in the Oldham area around 1820's.

We were advised that they came from Pontefract, but the lovely people from the Pontefract Historical Society advise me that they didn't appear in their records until the 1840's.

We were advised that they had 2 children in Oldham but I can't find anything.

Can anybody advise why birth's for the area and time frame are so difficult to find??

Charlotte Maria Gilchrist 24 feb 1817 born 1816

also a little earlier

Thank you for the replies.

Thanks also to Pegasuss for the information on Oldham. I had looked it up on Wikipedia, but it had very little information.

Anyway the people we are after are:

Parents were: John Gilchrist (born about 1767) and Sarah ?? (born about 1801)

Children were:

Mary Ann Gilchrist born 1820 Oldham, Lancashire
William Lane Gilchrist born 1823 Oldham, Lancashire

Information from the Pontefract Society tell us the 3rd child wasn't in their records, however on census information she has listed her birth place as Pontefract; her name was Maria Gilchrist born 1826 (allegedly Pontefract, YKS).

A lot of problems we are having is the surname, there are that many variations it is becoming a nightmare here are some: Kilchrist,Killchrist, Gilchriest, Gilcrease, Kilcrease, Killcrease and the latest was Kilerease.  Undecided

We are hoping to back track through the children as to where the parents were married.  This may then lead us back to where Sarah ?? was born and what her maiden name was, as well as confirming if our John Gilchrist was a British Subject born in Philadelphia (USA), as he has stated in Census records; but we have been unable to prove so far.
