Shelter of Falmouth / Cornwall Rescue Association
« on: Monday 21 July 08 22:45 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help me please?  I am looking for information on an organisation called the Cornwall Rescue Association or the Shelter of Falmouth which was run by the Association.

My relative was born at St Olave's home in Bartholemew Street East in Exeter but his mother was living at the Falmouth Shelter until she was around 8 months pregnant and she returned to the Shelter after the birth.

I have been told by Devon Records Office that the Shelter was located at 4 Mt. Edgecumbe Villas in Falmouth and the Superintendent of the House was a Miss Long, in the early 1920s at least.  The DRO did contact the Cornwall Records Office for me but were told that the CRO does not hold any records for the shelter.

I would be grateful for any information which anybody can give me on the Shelter, however general, and /or whereabouts in Falmouth Mt Edgecumbe Villas were situated.

Hope someone is able to help Wendy. I am not having any luck with it. I found the address in 1901 but alas it was no help RG13/2227 Folio 19 page 30 - 4 Mt Edgecumbe Villas at start of page is occupied in 1901 by George Williams Head 27 railway clerk, his wife and daughter. When I go to previous page I find No 4 appears to start with Emily Alsebrook Wife 29 and her daughter, before we turn the page to George Williams Head. The other 3 Villas are all occupied by single families.

I can't see a Miss LONG in Falmouth in 1901. Only 2 females one married the other widowed.

1910 Kelly's Directory lists Miss Long 6 Park Terrace Falmouth (unfortunately nothing further listed).....Kris  Cheesy

Historical directories have the villas
No 4 in 1912 is occupied by JOHN CONDAY WEBB, mariner

They can be accessed from the genuki page

Althea

Many thanks for the link to the directories.  The trail has only recently taken me to Falmouth and I was unaware that they existed.  I shall also be perusing the site for information on some of the other areas I am interested in.

It's strange isn't it that no one has been able to come up with any information on the shelter.  I can only assume it was a pretty small enterprise, presumably set up privately to help ladies "in trouble".  That could explain why the CRO have no records of or for it.

No doubt the lady I am interested in was sent away from her home elsewhere in Cornwall when her "indiscretion" became apparent.  Even the labouring classes have their standards.  I have no idea when or how she came to move to Falmouth or when she would have been taken in by the Shelter.  Helpful as the DRO were, they could only give me the address and dates she moved from and back to Falmouth.

Unfortunately, I cannot be any more specific about the information I have other than to say that I am talking about the early 1920s as she went on to build a new life and family for herself. members of which could still be alive and reading this.  It seems unlikely that they would know of her "shameful" past.
