Hi Folks,

Could any of you give me some advice as to how I could find(if possible) a birth certificate of an ancestor of mine.
Her name is Jane Bowen. She was born approx 1859-1861 in Cape Town.  Her father was named Patrick Bowen and was in the British Military.  When he married in Portadown(n. Ireland) he was enlisted with the 59th regiment of foot.  Patrick Bowen and his wife Jane(nee Harvey) had their children in many different parts of the world. Ireland(north and south), England, Scotland, Canada and Jane in Cape Town. Jane's birth details though remain elusive. Any help appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks so much for very prompt reply. I have the info you give me. It was  almost the first info I had on the family except for the marraige of jane(nee harvey) and Patrick Bowen in Seagoe Church of Ireland, Portadown. 
I was writing from memory the other night when I posted my query so unfortunately entered the wrong year/approximate year  of birth for Jane bowen. I have quite a bit of info on the family and have met a few of their descendants who live in USA whereas I live in the 'homeland' ie Ireland.

It is the actual certificate or failing that the details of the certificate of Jane's birth I am after. It is proving very difficult to locate if indeed it exists.

Re the census data - It is great to have the data from census ' available but sometimes as in the case of this one it does list some of the ages incorrectly which is why I like to try to find church records etc too .

Thanks very much for the help though  all input is gladly received.
Perhaps as her father Patrick was in the army I could try posting in the armed forces section?? It may be worth a try,
