Hi Amy
In reply to your private message
Checked my memorial database for the surname fordham - it came back with zilch.
Were Charles & Lucy from the Lewes area or / and were the children born in Lewes - info that may help me find them at a later date

Hi again Amy
Found this on the 1871 census which looks very promising: Unfortunately my browser refuses to go into the actual image of the census to get his occupation and address, although it lets me pick up everything else.
RG 10/ 1596/ Folio 80/ Page 2 – Newmarket, Suffolk.
FORDHAM Charles, Head, Marr, 25, born Cambridge Lucy, Wife, Marr, 26, born Lewes, Sussex Charles, Son, Unm, 4, born Lewes, Sussex James, Son, Unm, 2, born Newmarket,
If it is the required family, looks as though they have moved on - what was her maiden name as she was born in Lewes - possibly have members of her family in the database, etc..

Brilliant!! That's the family. Thank you so much for this. Her maiden name was Stevens by the way. That is the first trace of her after she married Charles. Sorry to be a pain but do you have access to Cambridge census?

Have quite a few Stevens / Stephens in the database - both burials, baptisms and Memorial Stones. There is a set of wrought iron crosses - all to the Stevens family in St John Sub Castro in Lewes - would be nice to tie them down to a particular family.
1871 & 1891 census for Cambridge is on line - what were you looking for.

The Stevens Family was James and Ruth, they had 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. Samuel the son never married. I have the tombstone inscription for James, he is buried (1855) in Southover with his daughter Ellen Broster. I also have his will. After her husbands death Ruth ran a boarding house in Priory Street. It is just speculation but I think that is how Charles and Lucy met; he may have stayed in the boarding house when he came down from Cambridge for the races (he was a jockey.)
As for the look-up: Charles Fordham's mother Amelia remarried in 1852 to William Rayner. She would have been living in Cambridge in 1871. She would be aged about 45 and her husband 47. Thank you very much for this.

Hi Amy
These entries in the baptism register at St John Sub Castro have always intrigued me - perhaps you can fit them in your tree somewhere:
1862 Oct 30, Fordham James, m, son of James / Diana Pedlar, St Michaels, Jockey. 1862 Nov 30, Fordham James m, son of James / Diana Pedlar, St Michaels, Jockey. 1863 Nov 29, Fordham Emily Mary, f, dau of James / Diana, St Annes, Jockey. 1867 Apr 28, Fordham George William, m, son of James / Diana Pedlar, St Annes, Jockey.

I sure can. They are part of a very interesting line I am working on.
Amelia Wing and James Fordham had the following children:
James W. Fordham, born 1835 in Cambridge; died abt 1891 in Lewes. He married Diana Pollard/Pedlar. George Fordham, born 1837 in Cambridge; died 1887. He married (1) ? Hide; (2) Lydia Selth. Amelia Fordham, born 21 Nov 1839 in Cambridge; christened 15 Dec 1839; died abt 1841 in Cambridge. Thomas Fordham, born 1842 in Cambridge. He married Catherine Clements. Charles Fordham, born 14 May 1845 in King Street, Cambridge; died abt 1884 in Cambridge; buried 15 Aug 1884 in St Andrews the Less, Cambridge. He married Lucy Stevens.
James (Jnr), George and Charles all came to Sussex in the early 1860's. They were all jockeys. George became very famous and still holds the world record for most wins (7) at the 1000 Guineas.
Like I said Amelia Fordham remarried in Dec 1852 to William Rayner, a horse dealer. They had at least 1 child together, Sarah Ann, and William was possibly the father of Amelia illegitimate daughter Amelia Fordham, born about 1850. (Her husband had died in 1845)

Try this for size (bit wrong with the ages though)
RG10/ 1585/ Folio 64/ Pages 19/20 - Fitzroy Street, Cambridge Part of the family at the bottom of page 19 - rest overleaf on page 20

Hi Amy
This is weird - it still wont let me in to the census return of Charles / Lucy in Newmarket, Suffolk - although it let me into the other scans ; strange to say the least.
I see from your list that you have several names associated with Lewes - let me know if I can help you with specific enquiries rather than a blanket search.

Hi there Amy
Just had a look on my database for Southover:
There are two stones to the Stevens:
Memorial Number 100 Henry Stevens, aged 64 in 1863 Mary Stevens, aged 100 in 1895
Memorial Number 205 James Stevens, aged 45 in 1855 Eileen Edgley Stevens, aged 36 in 1869
Would you like a digital picture of either stone or both as I will be in Anne of Cleve House on Monday next; it is just across the road from St John the Baptist at Southover.

Hi Marie P
Welcome to Rootschat, nice to have you aboard.
If you can give as much info as you can on the names you listed, I will do whatever I can to help you - but its silly doing work and finding information that you already have
Over to you
