Has anyone got records which would give information about a draper's shop on Spotland Road, Rochdale? I believe my grandfather worked there in the early 1900s, and my father was apprenticed there in the 1920s/30s. From memory the shop was called Ashworth's.
Grateful for any information.

Why not write a letter to the Rochdale Observer and see if anyone remembers him? You never know you may be lucky.

I have just asked one of our Blackwell descendants who stilll lives in Rochdale and she remembers the Ashworths but has no other info.
Would the trade directories be of any use? You could always ask the local studies if they have any records.
Cannot think of any other suggestion except to say I hope you are keeping fit for September...if my memory serves me correctly......and that all the preparations are in place.

Hello again, Norah.
At least I seem to have remembered the shop's name correctly. I don't believe that these Ashworths are related to those buried in the group of Hurst/Butterworth/Clegg Ashworth graves mentioned on that other thread.
Local Studies at Touchstones is obviously the way to go. I still have Grandfather's traditional draper's yardstick, which is cylindrical and rounded at both ends, presumably so as not to spoil the fabric.
Yes, you're right, early September is fast approaching, (my daughter's wedding, for you other folk ). The traditional large hat has been purchased for the bride's mother, along with copious quantities of Pimms No 1 (not for the bride's mother, I hasten to add, but because the bride doesn't like champagne) and after an initial scare with the vintage wedding dress things do seem to be under control, fingers & toes crossed.
All the best
Gill

It was good to hear that everything is ready for the BIG DAY. WE hope it will be bright and sunny. Good weather is such a bonus. Give our Best Wishes to the bride and groom.
I do not think you could do better than asking Touchstones for info.
What a treasure to have the cyndrical measuring stick. Those of us who remember one of those must be getting old
I did the family of one of my mother's Clegg cousins and she had Ashworths in her family. They were a yeoman family in Whitworth but descendants went into various areas of the building trade nearer to Rochdale. Only one son was given the original farm holding. That family is buried in St. Bart's, Whitworth. However, there is no need to tell YOU that we have some very common names with Clegg. Ashworths and who has not a Butterworth? I have a number of those
With Best Wishes
Norah
