Advice please for a novice
« on: Wednesday 23 July 08 10:23 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I have discoverd that a relative, Mary Patricia Hamblett, was born in 20, Windmill Street, Limerick in 1930 to Mark Foden Hamblett and Mary Ellen Beary. The Electoral Register for 1923 shows Mark and Mary Ellen as voters living at the above address.
I am a novice to Irish ancestry, so could someone please advise how best I can find out when and where the above couple married (it was presumably no later than 1923) and then obtain a copy of their marriage certificate, which will hopefully give info re-fathers.
Many thanks.

Hi Bri

You could try applying  to the General Register Office in Roscommon for a copy of the marriage certificate as you know both names.I'm not sure whether they need the exact year or if they would search for a few years.
It's sometimes quicker to apply to the local county register office - and they accept cash(10euros).
I've enclosed the link - click on 'Fees' and scroll down to see each individual registrar.
Also have a look at the '1911 census Limerick Householders' i.e. heads of household only. There's a John Beary living in 6 Windmill Street in 1911 -could be a possibility for Mary's father?
I couldn't find any Hambletts in 1911 so wondered whether Mark and his family were from Limerick.
Bri - this is just a possibility- On the 'Free BMD 'site there's a birth in 1898 for a Mark Foden Hamblett registered in Congleton Cheshire.
On Ancestry on the World War 1 Medal Rolls there's an entry for a Mark F Hamblett(Royal Welsh Fusiliers)who received two medals in World War 1.

'IF' this is him then it might explain why he was in Ireland - perhaps he was stationed there? I think Sarsfield Barracks was in Limerick.

On the 1901 census (England) Mark F Hamblett  born Cheshire age 3 is living with his parents James and Ellen in Kidsgrove.

Of course this is only a possibility - if Mark was in the army then it might be worth ringing the registrar(or mentioning it if you apply) as I'm not sure whether soldiers marriage certificates were held in Dublin and not locally  in Limerick.
Here are the links -

The 1911 census of Ireland is being put on line but Limerick is not on yet!

If you would like to have a look at the medal index card or census record (1901 England)I can send you the details

I hope this helps

Regards

Hi Neptune,
Many thanks for your reply and suggestions. I think that you may well be right about the Mark Foden Hamblett born in Congleton - there can't be many people with that name. I was told that he was from Ireland but that may well be wrong. Foden Trucks are from Cheshire, so he may be linked to that company.
We live in Kent but as a pure conicidence my wife and I are off to Cheshire this morning to visit friends for a few days.
I will follow up on your suggestions on my return. Thanks again  -very kind of you.
Regards,
Bri

Hi again

You're welcome.
It was the name Foden that made me think as it is a Cheshire name.
Foden trucks(and ERF) were from Sandbach in Cheshire.

There's also an entry for a baptism for a Mary Ellen Beary in 1901 in Limerick(Limerick No 2 parish)
This could be Ellen - only thing there's a charge of 5 euros to view each record so it could work out expensive if it's not the right one.(it's free to register  and search but you have to pay to view each individual record)

Good luck with your search.

Hi Neptune,
Many thanks for your info. We are now back from our Cheshire trip. The websites you gave me will be most helpful and I will no doubt end up paying the Euros!!
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
Brian

Do you know the religion of this couple?   The Parish Register for whichever religion will doubtless give information on their addresses, names of fathers, occupations - and you may see who witnessed the marriage - which would provide further clues.

Marriage certificate should list address of bride and groom at time of marriage, names and occupations of fathers and names of two witnesses, as well as date and place of marriage.
