Rothwell's not found in census's

I am having a very frustrating time trying to find my ancestors in the Census's. Richard Rothwell (1835) married Alice Booth(1836) in about 1861 in Bury and went on to have Eliza A (1862), Margaret (1866) Joseph (1868) Isaac (1872) and Annie (1878). I can find the family in 1971 with Richard as a shipbuilder  but cannot find them on any other census which is very odd. There is quite a high chance that they weren't married on the night of the 1861 census but there is no reason not to find them together in 1881 and 1891. Some of the children were born in Birkinhead and Isaac lived in Stockton, Durham in 1901 but nothing on any other census, very weird. Can anyone please help?? Undecided

It's not just Isaac in Stockton in 1901 - Richard & Alice and Annie are there too.

Looks like Isaac was born circa July 1870 (8 months old in the 1871 census).

A simple check on free BMD reveals Richard Rothwell married Alice Booth in the 1st quarter of 1860, Bury 8c 846.
