What's on the marriage certificate?
Names, ages, occupations, fathers' names, and witnesses will all be a help.

edit: I see the groom's age is in the heading, this is him when he married?

Hi,
he is in 1901 census:

1901 RG13; Piece: 1147; Folio: 60; Page: 15

41 Knollys Street Reading

Chas H Smith 38 yrs cattle dealer b Reading
Ada 33 yrs b Didcot
Charles 8 yrs b Reading
Nellie 5 yrs b Reading
Ada 15 months b Reading

but it is difficult to pinpoint him in earlier censuses as you say Ann. You say they both came to Reading in 1889  Huh

East Hagbourne comes  under Wallingford (Berkshire) but freebmd isn't throwing up a marriage.   (it may not be in)

yes it is - married as Henry Charles.

thankyou.. but all the imformation you have given me I already had.and yes he married as Henry charles smith (legal name) from then on was always charles H smith its just were did he live or work possible in the area prior to his marriage jan 1889. I have been to the St Andrews church to look at bans but only reads East Hagbourne I have checked all the census that prehaps he was living with one of Ada Andrews family nothink there. his fathers name charles smith labourer ?
it will be someone like you all that just has that bit of imformation that will direct me.unfortunatly I started doing my fathers side when my Aunts etc had passed on. one person I though would have some imformatio my cousin Laurie Fennell but on visiting him wasnt no help! although he think he did,  afraid prehaps I was after an inheritence.
I think I will have a go at going down one of my Aunts family might get some clues there.
keep looking for me

his fathers name charles smith labourer ?

Are you sure about this name?  The question mark suggests uncertainty.
Have you only looked at the banns?   If you get the marriage certificate, it will give the father's name (if there is one).

yes I have the marriage certificate  and Banns gives no address for either.. just East Hagbourne. the witnesses were willie mills and Edith Mills this surname being on Adas side was her mothers maiden name. charles was 23 batchelor a dealer. Ada was 20 spinster. father to charles was charles smith and Ada father was Joseph Andrews carpenter.both signed in there own hand. charles  died 1929 age 69 a
cattle dealer so his age on marriage cert and death certificate differs to what is correct by 6yrs.I have seen the actual marriage certificate and clearly says age 23 I was hopping 23 might have been 28 no such luck.
I have been able to follow him from approx 1889 to 1929 just cant get that link to know were he was before he got married?Huh
thankyou all for your help, always just that pinch of info and I would sail away. its out there somewere/

Hi Sue  its probably my daughters tree on Ancestry..I have a tree there as well. I have come to the conclusion many times that my grandfather never knew were he was born or his age. and nor did anyone else. thanks so much for the imfo .over the past 20 years I keep picking him up hopeing somethink will link to him but after another fruitless time,I usualy go to other parts of the family. thought my mother would have been hard with a maiden name OWEN from Wales but she came from a  family line of Ministers and the likes.
sincerely
