Mankelow family
« on: Friday 13 November 09 21:04 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for the Mankelow family, mainly in Kent, but also Sussex. The spelling varies i.e. Mackallo, Mackallo etc.

Also like to find the ascendants of William Mackallo born circa 1570 Pembury Kent who was a "collyer", could have come over from France, Italy etc. for the Iron/arms (cannon) industry.

Any help please  Smiley

Hi

From the 1785 Land Tax there are not many instances of Mankelow but I will list the ones there are.
There are some Lands called Mankelows in Wadhurst owned by Mr Mercer and occupied by Thomas Stapely.
There is also a John Manktelow living on some lands called Smalls owned by Mr Usherwood in Wadhurst.

Settlements
Richard Manktelow, wife Elizabeth and children Richard & Elizabeth settlement certificate issued in 1780 & 1783 for Ticehurst to Wadhurst.

Looking at the Sussex Marriage Index most marriages look to be around Wadhurst or Lamberhurst, Kent.

Regards Sean

Thankyou, for this  Smiley
while not what I thought I was looking for, it is very interesting - mainly because I did not think of this! Embarrassed
Its probably just me, but, you say "There are some Lands called Mankelows in Wadhurst owned by Mr Mercer and occupied by Thomas Stapely." The name Mankelow is a surname, how can Land be called Mankelows? - unless it had been named after them.

It is usually named after those who owned the land before would be my assumption.

Looking at the 1747 Window & House Tax Assessment for Wadhurst there is a John Mantelow who owns a house so maybe it was his.
