I am looking for the Mankelow family, mainly in Kent, but also Sussex. The spelling varies i.e. Mackallo, Mackallo etc.
Also like to find the ascendants of William Mackallo born circa 1570 Pembury Kent who was a "collyer", could have come over from France, Italy etc. for the Iron/arms (cannon) industry.
Any help please

Hi
From the 1785 Land Tax there are not many instances of Mankelow but I will list the ones there are. There are some Lands called Mankelows in Wadhurst owned by Mr Mercer and occupied by Thomas Stapely. There is also a John Manktelow living on some lands called Smalls owned by Mr Usherwood in Wadhurst.
Settlements Richard Manktelow, wife Elizabeth and children Richard & Elizabeth settlement certificate issued in 1780 & 1783 for Ticehurst to Wadhurst.
Looking at the Sussex Marriage Index most marriages look to be around Wadhurst or Lamberhurst, Kent.
Regards Sean

Thankyou, for this while not what I thought I was looking for, it is very interesting - mainly because I did not think of this! Its probably just me, but, you say "There are some Lands called Mankelows in Wadhurst owned by Mr Mercer and occupied by Thomas Stapely." The name Mankelow is a surname, how can Land be called Mankelows? - unless it had been named after them.
