Hanley search for Sims about 1864
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 07:59 BST (UK) »

I am searching for the birth of  Thomas William Ashton SIMS. born about 1864. On his marriage certificate in 1885 his age is 21yrsand his father  is also  named as Thomas Henry Ashton Sims ( deceased) occupation Collier.
I have found a possible marriage of a Thomas Sims (age 20 ) occupation Collier in 1862 to a Mary Ann Drakeford ( age 20 ) occupation Potter. both resident in Shelton . the marriage was at St. Luke's Church. If these are the right parents then perhaps my Thomas William Ashton was christened there.
Family story said that the father Thomas was killed in a colliery accident but I have not been able to find his death.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Prue, found this entry in the 1871 census.......

61 St Mark St Shelton Hanley Staffordshire
RG10/2864 F8 p9

Walter Skinner 28 Worcester Potter's Turner
Mary Ann Skinner 28 Hanley
Edward Thos Sims 7 stepson Hanley Scholar
Frances Sims 4 stepdau  Burslem            "
Alfred Skinner son 6 months Hanley

A Marriage Free bmd.........Walter Skinner Dec 1867 Wolstanton 6b 140
On same page is Mary Ann Simms

Death - Thomas Simms age 24 Wolstanton 6b 94 June 1866

There is this birth in Wolstanton for a William Simms June 1865 6b 95 (his name could have been changed around a few times judging by the 1871 census)

Hello,
According to Staffordshirebmd.org.uk, the marriage for Thomas Simms to Mary Ann Drakeford was at Wellington St Luke's(SoT), and that for Mary Ann Simms to Walter Skinner was at Burslem St John's.

Thanks for searching but the only way I could be sure is if I find the   birth registered.  the only other clue I have is that Thomas William Ashton Sims' mother married a few times and eventually  married a Mr. Butcher and had a daughter Hannah. If Thomas' mother was born about 1842 then Hannah would probably have been born before 1901. I am guessing that T.W. A. Sims born about 1864 then his mother would be about 20 making her birth 1840.so far no records have been found of his father's death .
Thanks for taking the time to search.
Regards,
Prue.

Hi Prue

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES/2004-05/1085142111

I'm just curious - if there was some "movement" as to Thomas's first middle name, "William?" Or was there a mix up between the father and son SIMS in the first marriage record?
Because his marriage to Alma Lottie BULL appears twice, a year apart in the FREEBMD:

1) Dec Qtr 1885 Gravesend - groom: Thomas Henry A SIMS
2) Dec Qtr 1886 Medway - groom: Thomas William A SIMS

1891: Thomas is on a list of Marines NOT on Board the HMS Invincible in Portsmouth Dockyard, Portsea Island, Hampshire on Census night
Thomas SIMMS 27, married, Private, b Hanley, Stafford
RG12/ Piece: 863 /  Folio 120 /  Pg 30

1891: Thomas 26, Royal Marine Priv. 26, b Hanley Satffs.  is with his wife and 2 children in Village of Netley, Hound St Mary, Southampton
RG12 /  Piece: 923 /  Folio 9 /  pg 11

Could there be any clues in the witness' to his marriage(s) to Alma?
Also, if his Naval papers are available, did it provide an address, DOB or  next-of-kin on enlistment?

cheers

Hi  Ambly,

Yes you are right we have copies of the 2 certificates.  In 1885 Thomas signs as Thomas Henry Ashton. The 1886 copy is almost illegible but he has signed as Thomas William Ashton . The witnesses do not seem to be relatives and are not known.  Most records that we have show that he used  the names Thomas William Ashton. However at times he also used the name Edward as well !
In Jan-Oct. 1890 Thomas served on the Invincible on Coast guard service based at Netley , Southampton, which fits in with the 1891 Census record.
On his enlistment  details  d.o b. July 1863 his place of birth is Stoke on Trent Hanley. His trade was  Carter. Religion C of E. He enlisted Jan. 1882 at Hanley and onto Walmer 19Jan  1882 - 26 July 1882 .
The Staffs Registrar office searched for his birth without success. So we are still looking.
Thank you for helping.
Kind regards,
Prue
