Mattingley Henley-on-thames look up
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 11:30 BST (UK) »

Working through the next level back to Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. I have conflicting info from another familiy member. Presently trying to trace the parents of Thomas James Gairns Mattingley. b, 17 Nov 1843. I believe that there are other members of the same family in the Henley-on-Thames area. The claim is his parents were John Thomas Mattingley and Elizabeth Ann Long? Like all info it's essential to confirm. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have Thomas's birth certificate - this would confirm his parents' names (including mother's maiden name)?

Hi,

From Henley St Marys PRs, courtesy of an Oxon FHS CD:

Baptised Feb 23 1845 Thomas James Mattingley s/o John Thomas, an upholsterer, and Elizabeth Ann.

He's the only Thomas James Mattingley in the indices.

Hi Tati,
Thanks for the info it looks very promising indeed as I have a confirmed birth place for Thomas James Gairns Mattingley as Henley-on-Thames. I will look at the UK atlas and see how close Reading, St Giles is to Henley. Some of the offspring match the rough info I have from our cousin. There is an exact match in the very unusual name "Montom" I have "Montem". Apparentley there were 11 offspring. I note that Fanny was born in Henley! Must be the family. Smiley Thank you for the instant help.

Montom, hat a name! FreeBMD spells is Montam but it looks like Montom on the original index.

Hi Pennie
I don't have the birth cert. I only have his lenghthy occupation record as a Teacher in Toowoomba, Qld where I noted his DOB and Nationality as English (Henley-on-Thames). Will need to visit the State Library in Melbourne to get the BDM info. PS FYI his salary as a teacher in 1883 Qld was £100 (in Australia)

I just noticed the anomaly in John's occupation - an upholsterer in 1845 and a brewer in 1851!!

So, I looked up the baptisms for the other children on the 1851 census, as provided by Tati:

Aug 24 1838 (born July 23 1838) Amelia Fanny d/o John Thomas, upholsterer & Elizabeth

Sep 2 1840 (born May 27 1840) Ellen Elizabeth - father still an upholsterer.

Sep 9 1846 Montom Edward - father still an upholsterer

both baptised Aug 22 1849 (doesn't give birth dates) Alfred Joseph & Elizabeth Jemima - father still an upholsterer

That's it, so it looks as if their ties to Reading precipitated the change in occupation. Perhaps a relative died and left them the brewing business?

They didn't marry in Henley - more likely in Reading?

Jill

Just seen the 1841 census - will look to see if the 2 oldest children - Charles & Albert were baptised in Henley. I might have missed them.

Hi to all from cold Melbourne,
The 11 offspring I have for John Thomas Mattingley but none confirmed and no BDM dates are, Cecelia, Robert, Charles, Emily, Albert, Amelia, Ellen, Thomas James, Montem, Alfred and Elizabeth. The occupation I had for John Thomas Mattingley was Cabinet Maker! Obviously family history that has passed down through the generations on the sketchy piece of paper I have!

So, there may be 2 even older children lurking in the background!. I'll have another look in Henley - trouble is that there are so many baptisms in Henley that they are divided into sections, and I'm obviously not going back far enough!!  Roll Eyes

Anyway - good news - I've found John & Elizabeth's marriage on Family History Online:

9 June 1829 New Windsor, Berks
John Thomas Mattingley & Elizabeth Long.

Hi Jill
Many thanks for your input and help. EXCELLENT Grin The pieces of the jigsaw are now falling into place and creating a clearer picture! It may be that there are two earlier offspring as the son Charles was age 8 from the 1841 census, ie b.1833. If John & Elizabeth maried in 1829 one can assume that they had other offspring from 1829 to 1833? Perhaps the harsh conditions back then had an affect on the lives of the family.

Hi Nigel,

It seems the 2 missing children were born/baptised in St Giles Reading. From the IGI:

baptised 23 Apr 1830 Elizabeth Cecilia d/o John Thomas & Elizabeth Ann

baptised 29 Jun 1831 Robert John Mattingley s/o John Thomas & Elizabeth Ann

Both are IGIs extracted from the PRs so should be reliable.

That's great  Smiley I now have all 11 offspring and from other notes I have from the Genealogical Society of Victoria I can match names and more dates in Melbourne. The John Thomas Mattingley family came to Australia and two of his sons were schoolteachers. My next task is to search shipping records for the date of arrival etc and to tie in other info I have of the family. Many thanks to all for the great help you've been. Must sign off now as its nearly midnight in Melbourne!
