William and Jane Croxall 1871 census pos Birmingham COMPLETED. THANK YOU DAISY
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 12:23 BST (UK) »

William Croxall was born about 1847 at Beoley Mill, near Redditch, Worcestershire. On various documents the Croxall surname has been transcribed as Croxhall, Crosall, Crodwell etc.

In 1851 and 1861 he is living at Beoley with his parents and siblings.
In 1858 he married Jane Jeffs at the Wesleyan Chapel in Redditch.

Eventually I found William, Jane and their family on the 1881 census living at Kingswinford, Staffordshire. Their name was transcribed as Crodwell and place of birth for everyone was Redditch.

By 1891 the family had moved to Manchester and the place of birth for all of the family are very specific.

William Croxall, born Beoley Mill, Worcestershire
Jane Croxall, born Stone Pitts (?) Worcestershire
James Croxall, 15, born Knowle, Warwickshire
Thomas Croxall, 13, born Birmingham, Warwickshire

From this information it seems possible that the family may have been in Warwickshire for the 1871 census, but I can't find them anywhere. They probably had an older daughter, Elizabeth Croxall with them then, aged about 3.

Can anyone find the Croxalls anywhere on the 1871 census please?

Angela

Would your William Croxall born 1847 be the son or maybe the grandson of William and Elizabeth Croxall?

If so he would be the younger brother of Charles Croxall b c1824 in Walton on Trent.  Who was my Great X3 Grandfather.

I am still trying to get to grips with my Croxall branch but it appears that William and Elizabeth + children moved to Redditch before the 1841 census. At 1841 census William, Elizabeth and son James lived in Red Lane Redditch. Their son Charles was a male servant living in Boeley Lane. Charles had a daughter born 1847 too so maybe your William was the son of a sibling of Charles.

Anyway from all the correspondence I have had about the Croxalls over the past year it appears that the Croxall's of Redditch are all related so we just have to find the connection.

Very best wishes
Helen

Hello Helen

I believe William's father was the James Croxall living with his parents William and Elizabeth in 1841. Therefore the William I am enquiring about would be a grandson of William Croxall and Elizabeth Scattergood.

My direct ancestor was yet another William Croxall, born 1821, Walton on Trent, older brother of James and the Charles who is your greatx3 grandfather.

I am in contact with another descendent of the Redditch Croxalls who lives in the USA. We have been working together to track William, 1847 who was born at Beoley Mill (Redditch) and later moved to (Birmingham) then Manchester. Your 3x great grandfather Charles would have been his Uncle.

Kind regards
Angela

Hello Daisy

Thank you SO much. Yes, this is the family I have been looking for!

I have searched and searched for this family. Please can you tell me how you found them? I can't understand how I missed them on ancestry with their name spelled correctly, unless it was incorrectly transcribed.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Regards

Now I know why I couldn't find them on ancestry. They are transcribed as

William E Wall, age 22
Jane Wall, Age 22
James E Wall (DAUGHTER) age 3

This is a very poor transcription. No wonder I couldn't find them!!!!
