Marriage at Wishaw House, Cambusnethan
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 16:18 BST (UK) »

From the birth certs of 3 of her children I have the date and place of marriage of Elizabeth Forrest.

Two certs say 20th Aug 1850 and the later one gives the year as 1848.

They all say the marriage took place at Wishaw House, Cambusnethan.

There's no record of this on Scotlandspeople and the NAS could find nothing for these years ... their only suggestion was that maybe the records would be held locally.

This was over a year ago and I ran out of steam at that point as it seemed hopeless, but now I want another crack at it  Smiley

Please could anyone tell me who to contact or where else to try

No idea of the religion ... she married William Looker, who was from England

He worked as a Coachman for Lord Belhaven

According to the data here:

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/family-records/list-of-oprs-621to660.pdf  (scroll down to 628 for Cambusnethan)

the Cambusnethan marriage registers held at New Register House only go up to 1819.  I think the later one(s) have not been deposited.  Presumably still in the parish?

Hi Rachel,

Looked on IGI for children of William Looker and Elizabeth Forrest, and the following returned.

James Looker    b 07 Sep 1852 Wishaw died Feb 1926
Jessie Looker    b 01 Jun 1854 Wishaw
Female Looker    b 25 Jan 1856 Cambusnethan
William Henry Looker b 14 Feb 1858 Cambusnethan
Elizabeth Looker    b 21 Dec 1859 Bothwell
Rebecca Looker    b 04 Mar 1862 Old Monkland
Graham Looker    b 20 Oct 1863 Little Dunkeld
Alfred Lookar  sic   b 03 Nov 1865 Inchinnan
Graham Looker    b 12 Oct 1867 Little Dunkeld

Some of them are submitted so may not be accurate, and there could be different couple(s) with same names.

Smiley Thank you Nell and Tom
I do have all the children + their birth certs and spouses and descendants.

It's just that I can not get back any further with Elizabeth and William.

The marriage details may or may not tell me their fathers' names, but it does seem like the only option left.

I've been stuck with this for over 2 years and just hope that something will turn up one day  Sad

Rachel you should get all the parents names from William's and Elizabeths death records

Unfortunately they died in England, which means that their parents would not be shown.  Cry

By the early 1870s they had all left Scotland

It's unlikely that the OPR marriage record will mention parent names

I wondered if Wishaw House might have something, but have no idea who to contact.

The N.A.S. said maybe there would be something found locally .... but didn't say where to look
