just looking for him in further censuses
1871 William H Howard b 1848 Macclesfield  (transcribed as K)
1881 William H Howard b 1846 Macclesfield
1891 William H W Howard b 1847 Macclesfield

are you sure that William with mother Susan is yours?

I have searched and searched - however he remains a mystery!

good luck

I know just how you feel!

I think the James in 1861 is the one married to Ann.

Your William may just have given that name for his father- it does happen.
However Macclesfield was a big silk place and he always gives that as his place of birth so he has some connection there.
