What a nice image (aside from losing your specs). I do hope to visit one day - Next year with any luck. I am actually in New York, on Long Island.

Gadget: I wonder if I can get your opinion on something if you have the time. Its about Janet McLean's (M.S. McArthur's) parents...James McArthur and Janet McFarlane. I have census information for Janet McFarlane from 1841-1861 in Kippen - using her maiden name and listed as head of household. So...I assumed James had died pre 1841 because she was back to her maiden name. But, I just heard back from a woman at Balfron Heritage who said she found a death entry for James McArthur who died in Buchlyvie in 1866 at 74, certified by his daughter Janet McLean - but it said he was single. Is it at all possible that they got a divorce? That she went back to her maiden name and he is now considered single? What do you think? I would appreciate your input. Thank you. McCann

It could be that they might have just lived together and then decided to live separately. Children where often/usually known by their father's surname.
Have you followed James MacArthur back through the censuses?

Was James an Iron turner, b. Kippen because, if so, he's down as a widower on the 1861.

Also, if Janet was the one aged 67 on the 1861, she is also down as a widow.

I am so sorry Gadget - its Mary McFarlane, not Janet McFarlane. I aplogize for sending you the wrong way.
1841, Kippen - Mary McFarlen, 50, shoe bender(?), b. not Stirlingshire 1851 Mary McFarlane, 55, sewer, b. Glasgow 1861 Mary McFarlane, 64, former servant, b. Glasgow I have no census info for James. All I have is that he is listed as a general labourer.
I'm sorry for the error. As always, I apprecaite your input.

spank your hands, McCann
I assume that you haven't looked at the original image of the 1861 where Mary is listed as unmarried
I think my comment that they never married and that Mary was what is known as James's 'bidey in' looks probable.

I have slapped my hands in shame.
No. Actually, I haven't looked at the original images. They came from another friend here at RC. I appreciate the "unmarried" addition to my info. (That bidey in!).
However, in Janet's death entry dated 1889 it says Mary McArthur, M.S. McFarlane. ?? Hmmm.

Do you think they listed her with a maiden name to make it easier? No stigma? The familily didn't know better?
