***COMPLETED***What a wonderful discovery!!!
« on: Tuesday 25 January 05 00:20 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Today I have found an old family bible that my great aunt gave me in 1988 (which I put in a safe place but could never remember where!!!!!!).

It's one of the larger, heavier bibles, a bit weathered, but still in good condition for it's age......................and that old musty smell... how wonderful.

Written in beautiful handwriting at the back are the dates of birth of my grandmother, her brothers and sisters, my GGrandparents, and a couple of dates of death and burials.

When I carefully went through the pages I found an old serviette which had details of the pit disaster at the Universal Colliery, Senghenydd, South Wales in October 1913.  There were also 3 funeral memorial cards from 1986 and 1900 - are they relatives or just friends of the family?  I also discovered a photograph of a mysterious man named "Ned" see topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,31748.0.html

Also tucked between the pages were some very pretty bookmarks, all with beautiful coloured pictures of birds and flowers.

And just to make my day I also found my Mum's autograph book.  Her Aunty gave it to her for Christmas 1949 when Mum was 11 years old.

I have had a wonderful afternoon!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jan,
I know how you feel. I found my ggrdmoms confirmation bible from 1886.  The inscriptions took some time to figure out as the handwriting was awful and Belvedere looked like anything other than that so I had to look up All Saints C of E churches in Kent until I finally found and was helped by a clerk in one church. The other problem was the deteriation of the page with the writing.  The musty smell is a very nostalgic sense, but could be the harbenger of decay.  I would suggest that you may want to take the book to a conservator to protect it now before the decay sets in.
Congrats on the find its WONDERFULL to find something as treasured as your bible.

Thanks Ted for the advice about taking the bible to a conservator - I hadn't thought of that.

JillJ, when my great aunty gave me the bible I was really into cross-stitch.  I used to have this large bag that I kept all my cross-stitch things in and one day must have put the bible in there ( Huh Huh don't ask!!!).

It was only when we cleared out the cupboards in the garage on Monday that I found that cross-stitich bag again.......and there inside was the bible Huh

We have lived at our present address for nearly 5 years and the bag has been in the garage since the day we moved in LOL

I think I'm losing my mind Undecided  Embarrassed
