against a brick wall, can anyone help? sarah rossan oakes a minor married samuel h dodd 1846 st mary`s astbury cheshire. her address congleton. her father william oakes occupation gentleman. Dont know where to find out anything about oakes family. also what does the occupation "gentleman" mean. any help greatly appreciated.

      It seems that you have a marriage certificate ? if so can you post again with full details of ages of both bride and groom,any witness names and Samuels fathers name and occupation,also what census info do you have ?
     As for the term Gentleman its meaning in the 1800's was generally someone who was not personally involved in working with their hands,a professional man,a man of property or some one with a private income.
