Hi Burto,
Haven't had a chance to look for Ann (JA) yet, as I've been helping another rootschatter with another mystery, but I did go into Peterborough library to look for details of a will on the National Probate Calendar this afternoon.
While I was there I looked to see if there were any details of a will for Samuel Burton in 1890 or 1891, just in case you haven't looked yourself - but sadly there wasn't anything Sad Hoped to solve a few mysteries about what had been going on Huh
Will scout around for Ann (JA) on the census later today, after I get  some kip.
Bye for now,

Hi Pauline,
Here is the link to one of my first threads with info on Robert in 1901 and his wife in 1891:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,78968.0.html

I hope you don't get too confused!!! But his wife Lavinia calls herself a Clark in 1891. I have no idea where Robert is in 1891.
I thought looking for May and Charles Burton's baptisms in Leeds and Lincoln might help, I think I found them on FreeBMD so have asked on relevant boards and will let you know (see 1901 entry!).
Maybe you will be able to make some sense of it all, because the more I look at it, the more I realise that it seems to be a genetic thing to move around, change your name and generally cause confusion for your descendants!!!
Thank you for all your help.

Hi Burto,
Hmm, yes - confusing to say the least!
Well, after much searching all I can come up with are these:

1881 Census:
Ellen Clarke b. 1862
Birthplace: Nottingham
Dwelling: 3 Princess Square, Nottingham
Occupation: Lace Dresser
Status: Unmarried
Head of Household: Francis Burns
RG11 3356/138 page 5

1881 Census:
Ann Burton   b. 1837
Birthplace: Basford
Dwelling: 39 Kingston Street
Sneinton, Nottingham
Occupation: Ironer Hosiery
Status: Unmarried
Head of Household: Ann Burton
RG11 3346/63   page 36

1881 census:
Ann Burton
Birthplace: Nottingham
Dwelling: The Union Workhouse, Basford
Occupation: None
Status: Unmarried
Head of Household: Richard Bennett
RG11 3331/160   page 15

Long shots, I'm afraid.
I did find a Robert Clarke in the army, in a barracks (born 1859 Ilverpool), but I've eliminated him.
Goddness, what a lot - almost like two others I've been trying to sort our for someone this week  Huh Huh Huh
Let me know if anything new comes to light

By the way, Burto, but I seem to remember that you were intersted in something I posted about Staffordshire families moving up  from the Black Country to Ilkeston ( could be wrong though Undecided). if it was you I've found this link:

http://www.ilkestonhistory.org.uk/Ilkeston%20Remembered.htm

Sorry, I can't come with anything more promising.

P.S. Are your relatives still reasonably close to the Nottingham area?

did you know that both Clark and King were (gypsy) Romany names? I could suggest you try the traveller board...

Hi An65,
I did wonder if they were Romany, especially with Ann and Salome moving to Liverpool and being small wares dealers for a bit, but I don't think it really suggests that...is a sawyer a Romany occupation? And they lived in a house in the middle of the city. I'd love to know what the connection with Liverpool was...thanks for getting in touch.

ok firstly, lotsa Romanies began to settle very early on and lots more 'wintered' in towns and villages, moving on and travelling through the good months of the year. Its worth remembering here the census was generally taken early in the year.....

Your family married into Kings and Elliots, and the latter deffo were Rom in Notts - most notably at Willoughby On The Wolds.

You are having trouble tracking them, which signifies a possible Romany connection, and the link with Liverpool is another plus sign - lotsa Rom went over that way in the latter half of the 1800s. Good pickings in the Liverpool and Blackpool areas, and many many Rom settled there.

Hi,

On Freereg she isn't. On Familysearch she isn't.
Why would this be? Many thanks.
Because neither of these are totally comprehensive. One must always remember not everything has been transcribed.

Hi An65,
I posted on the Travellers board...I am listening  Grin would love a Romany connection, but I feel I need solid proof....I guess that's going to prove hard all that time ago! With the Elliotts, they are not directly linked to the Clarkes and Kings-it was Joseph Ann's GGrandson who married an Elliott!
Maybe I should just look at the names Joseph Ann and Salome Asenath as proof?!

Hi,
Just thought I'd share where I'm at with this branch-
I have just emailed the archives to see if Joseph and Ann were married by license. Hopefully this will say whether Joseph has married before.
I'm trying to get hold of the death certificate for the 1837 Joseph.
I found another strange name on Freereg: Aquila Matilda Clark born 05/06/1814 to Joseph and Elizabeth Clark, Leen Side, Joseph's occupation is Sawyer!
On Familysearch, it actually gives the parents rough years of birth, Joseph's being about 1788 and Elizabeth's being 1792, however this does not tie in with the Elizabeth Clark who died in 1824's age of 41 so I'm not sure....

So I guess now I need to work out whether this Joseph is mine! Hopefully the certificate will let me know!
Thanks to everyone who has given suggestions, and keep them coming!!

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone could share their knowledge on this...just found Ann, Salome and Ann on the 1841 census HO 107 869 1 and it appears that next door to them was a Susanna King aged 26 living on her own  Huh
Just curious to know why this might be and also whether it could possibly be Ann's sister baring in mind it seems that Ann's maiden name was King? If so, why would she live alone and not with them? There is an Ann King born 1811 and a Susannah King born 1814 to a Willian and Mary King in St Mary's so perhaps they are sisters? If they are related, then they have a sister called Zinnia King born 1806..maybe that's where the strange names come from?!
