Hi All,
Susannah Levitt was my great great great grandmother.
Using Familysearch IGI, and some of the resources listed on the top of your Wiltshire board,I have over the years, been able to establish the following.
Susannah was the daughter of George Levitt and Elizabeth Marks who married in 1787 in Chippenham. I have found 4 daughters to this couple including Susannah who was Christened 1799.
In 1833 Susannah had a daughter [illigitimately] named Emma Levitt in Chippenham. {The name of a father even if known, was not permitted to be used without a marriage, I understand}
Susannah Levitt died aged 72 at Chippenham, still of the surname name Levitt. Her daughter, Emma Levitt married Edward Thomas Davis in Chippenham in 1855.
To the point at last!!
I have found a reference to Susannah in Pigot's Wiltshire Directory for 1830 which source found on your board.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/#Directories
There is an explanation on the site which I need help to understand. It says that Further information can be got from the original, facsimilie or microfiche about this entry.
Could someone tell me how I can do that from Australia and what information is likely to be found? With Thanks, Sue

All it says is Susannah Levitt, High Street, (Chippenham), Hat Maker
Try this website - Historical Directories
Search "by keyword" - Wiltshire, pre 1850, Levitt, and you will get some hits in Pigots

Hi Sue,
I would not expect much more in 1830. I don't have Wiltshire 1830 but My Cornwall Pigots 1830 simply list sections listed under occupations with names and towns.\ County divided into areas such as under Bossiney and Bos Castle I would see
SHOPKEEPERS and TRADERS Harris John Bos Castle Miller Harris Wm Bos Castle Blacksmith
Later I would expect a little more of an address and Occ at most.
I see Susannah mentioned in some later ones 1842 and 1844 Pigots High St Straw Hat Maker, 1852-3 Slaters Langley Road - Straw Bonnet Maker and PO Directory 1855 - Mrs - High St now she is aTea Dealer (thats as far as I have looked)

Hi Chris and Michael.
Thank you for your guidance and lookups. Have followed your tips and have seen what you pointed to .
Appreciate the other information too.
Interesting she popped a MRS in to her directory entry. Easier to be a widow I suppose in those times.
Sue

Other entries in Chippenham directories not previously mentioned:
1848 Kelly's Directory, Mrs Susan Levitt, strawbonnet maker, New Road 1852 Slater's Directory, Levitt, Susanna, Langley Road, srawbonnet maker 1859 Post Office Directory, Levitt, Susannah (Mrs), teadealer, High Street 1867 Post Office Directory, Levitt, Susanna (Mrs), lodging house keeper, Foghamshire
New Road and Langley Road are names of part of the B4069 which is the road from Chippenham to Sutton Benger. Foghamshire is a small street off the start of New Road in the centre of Chippenham - google Foghamshire, Chippenham for map.

Hi Dave, Thank you for those lookups. The little bit of geography was especially helpful as I have not much idea of Wiltshire's in and outs It sounds as if she didn't move far from the one spot in her life! Sue

It looks as if she established herself as a trader in the town and continued in the centre of things all her life.
