Casey family of Croom, Limerick
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 07:14 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any leads on the Casey family of Croom. Mary Casey left for England in about 1900. I believe her parents were Ned and Bridget. Among their other children were I think, Bridget, Jack, Joe, Margaret, Nell, Patrick and William. I think two of the boys went to America and Mary and Bridget went to England.

Do you have birthdates for any of the children? mother's maiden name? Ned is usually a nickname- would father have been Edward or some other name?

To start with there were, and still aren't, records kept of people going from Ireland to England, Scotland and Wales as all were part of U.K.

If two of the boys went to U.S. do you know when (approx.) and where they lived there? As you don't seem to know which two you could check for all the boys at www.ellisisland.org (registration required but free to use) to see if they landed in N.Y. 1892-1924. If so the passenger manifests (2 scanned pages) should list who they were travelling out to and name and address of nearest relative at home.

Thanks. I've found John Casey from Limerick, who sailed to New York in 1907. The ship's manifest states that he had been in Brooklyn for 7 years previously, which ties in with what a relative has told me, so I guess this is the right one. He was going to Brooklyn to stay with an aunt - Mrs Higgins. According to this record he was born in 1880, I guess in Croom.

Can any of the Census records of 1901 and 1911 for Limerick be obtained on microfiche or viewed online?

Have you looked at both pages of John's manifest to get all the details?

Not sure about census for Co. Limerick being online (try '1901 limerick census' & '1911 limerick census' in a search engine to check) but both can be order from your local LDS library (although if you are in UK I think you can't get 1911 one yet).

My name is Brian Casey.  My grandfather, Jack Casey, was one of the two Casey brothers from Croom that went to the U.S.   The other brother that went to the U.S. was Patrick.  Ned is a nickname.  Their father's name was Edward.
