What I know so far...

John Cross was married to Margaret (possibly Horn born Rame Cornwall ?1792) have been unable to find a marriage date or place.

They had several children that I have loads of info on but thier son Andrew born abt 1835 is a mystery after 1861 census.

I have a death cert for Margaret, dies 1873 which describes her as a widow but I cannot find John's death. (He is not the John Cross who died in 1867, Chard.


To knock down my brick wall I need to establish
1. When and where John Cross died.
2. Where Margeret was in 1871 census (and John if he was still alive.
3. What happened to Andrew.

Any advice/help gratefully received

     What about this one for Margaret in 1871?
           RG10 / 2406 / 33 / 28

Margaret Cross head, widow age 80 b Cornwall occ farmers wid of 20 acres
William son age 39 b Somerset occ shoe maker

Thank you so much!!

After spending the best part of 2 1/2 years trying to locate Margaret on the 1871 census you find her for me in minutes.

In my defence, even though you had found her I still couldn't find her on ancestry because she has been transcribed as Crop as has her son William. You giving me the RG10/2406/33/28 was the only way I was able to trace her and William.

Also I checked the original image on ancestry and noticed at the top of the next page a couple George and Sarah Crop. If you can spare the time could you have a look as see what you think, I reckon they might be in the same household not a seperate one as Ancestry suggests.

              Looking on FMP which is where i found Margaret this is the family you wanted to see Smiley

   1871
    RG10 / 2406 / 34 / 29

George Cross head age 77 b Devon
Sarah wife age 71 b Somerset

Address is also same Blackland, Chard

After doing an Address search Margaret and George live next door to each other so maybe

they are related. After doing a search for Johns death im afraid the only one i found is the 1867

one in Chard. Do you have that death cert as you say its not him. No luck with Andrew yet Huh

Yes I have the 1867 death cert. But it was £7 well spent 'cos it ruled him out.

John was on the 1861 census and according to the 1871 census Margaret appears to be still, at that point farming his farm, so he must have died in between.

So far ploughing through parish records have found nothing but going back to record office in 2 weeks so maybe then...
