Where is this place? Looks like Marstone
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 22:43 BST (UK) »

Hello

Can anyone help interpret the location of this entry in the Stretton On Dunsmore, Warks 1851 census.  The person is Thomas Holloway born about 1798 and it looks as if he is from Marstone - wherever that is!  I would like to see if i can find any further details about him - e.g baptism etc so that i can hopefully travel further back in time.  I do know that he married Mary Fletcher in Southam in 1827 so i imagine the place may have a Warwickshire link.

Unfortunately it looks as if he died sometime before 1861 and so he is not on the next census (Mary is though).  Therefore this is the only entry.

Any help appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance

TB

I found another one who was a Chain Maker living in Lye. Same age and also with a wife, Mary.

Hi TB

It could be Marton, which is in Warwickshire.

Can't find anything under Marton - so can't be sure.   It is plausible though being part of Southam.  Oh well - might come a bit unstuck with this one sadly!

Thanks Julie - i will look into that.

Update - i have looked on IGI and again no Holloways - very frustrating as it could be Maxstone, Marston, Prior Marston or somewhere else.  It looks to be in Warwickshire as the ditto priior to the name refers to a repeat of Warwickshire from the line above (which related to Stretton on Dunsmore).

If anyone can interpret the name and find the person on the IGI or similar i would be most grateful.

Regards

Hi

Entry on IGI for thomas holoway b 6 july 1794 in Radway, Warwick, which is just south of southam. Dates don't quite tie up but could be a possibility.

Thanks for that Pam.  That could be a possibilty.  At the minute it all seems to be a bit of a dead end!

I would lean towards Marston Doles myself which is just to the South East of Southam just before Priors Marston.
A death of Thomas Holloway is recorded in September 1858 in Rugby which included Stretton On Dunsmore.

Thanks Al.

That looks very promising as it is likely he died between 1851 and 1861 due to the census records.  Shame i can't find a baptism to help me go back further.

Hi
There is a hamlet called Marston (basically just one farm) which is just north of Wolston which is very close to Stretton on Dunsmore.
There is also a Marston Jabbett which is just south of Nuneaton
All the best

Thanks jvb

There appear to be a few options - shame i cannot find a Parish record to help tie down the possible area.

I'd try the parish record for Wolston first - maybe in Warwicks County Record Office ?
All the best
