Halston, Suffolk
« on: Friday 01 August 08 21:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have an ancestor who states his birthplace as what looks like Frinsfield, Suffolk in one place and Halston, Suffolk in another.  I can't find either on a map.  Does anyone know where they are?  I feel that Frinsfield might just be spelt how it sounded to someone writing it down so could be spelt in other ways.  I don't know how the Suffolk folk pronounce their place names.

Thanks

Hi,

I did wonder about Fressingfield and Harleston.

I did not get the information from the census but from the Muster Roll and Pay Lists of the army.  However I did photograph the information so will try and attach  the relevant bit.

Thank you both for your help.  Place name pronounciation is not my strong point!

Could Halston be confused with Halstead-that is on the Essex/Suffolk border? Just a thought if you can't find it elsewhere.

If it does prove to be Harleston as per suffolkmawther & suffolk sue (well done to them-that's brilliant deducing), then just to say that there is a village of Harleston (by Shelland and Onehouse) near Stowmarket, Suffolk, as well as the 'big' Harleston (by Redenhall) near the Norfolk border.

The written Halston is just as Harleston is pronounced  Cheesy

Harleston is included in White's for Suffolk as it really is just on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk.

There is a good Local History Recorder in Fressingfield, plus she is chair of the Local History Group - may be able to help further?

Shame your man is a Labourer as I have the page for Harleston open for White's 1844 and of course no help as only trades and professions are listed.

Thank you very much for all your help.  I shall contact the Local History Recorder to see if I can glean any more information.

My ancestor, William Brandish, was a soldier and he attested in Ipswich at the age of 15 for unlimited service.  He died whilst on furlough in Suffolk.  In fact he seemed to have died whilst starting his journey back to his regiment and was buried in Freckenham, Suffolk.

I have much appreciated your local knowledge and help.

Cheers
