Holloway info on death/murder - Kingswinford 1911 - Completed
« on: Saturday 02 August 08 14:34 UTC (UK) »

I have now got a copy of the death certificate of Herbert William Holloway, born 1st January 1885 in Leamington Spa.

He died on 26th November 1911 at Great Malvern Railway, Lenches Bridge, Pensnett, Kingswinford, Staffordshire.  His death certificate states that he died from a 'fracture of the base of the skull and laceration of the jugular vein - no evidence as to how such injuries were caused'.  An inquest was held with the Certificate received from Allen Stokes coroner for South West Staffs on November 26th 1911.

Rumour has it that he was murdered, which is suggested in the certificate, and i wondered if anyone could find any newspaper articles or reports from the time or be able to advise how i could get any further information?

Thanks in advance

TB

It essentially said the cause of his death was unknown although was caused by a confused wound to the back of the head with internal bleeding to the skull caused by laceration of the jugular vein.

He was on the miner's strike at the time and went out late one night and was found dead below a bridge by a train driver in the early hours of the following morning.

The angle he was lying at was questioned as perculiar and he was lying against an under wall.  It was also questioned if he could have pulled himself to the position he was found.

The coroner questioned whether he could have committed suicide although people who knew him said that he had never mentioned or done anything to suggest he was in that frame of mind.

It was reported that the gates leading to the siding were locked and that the drop was only about 7 foot.  Furthermore, witnesses who found him saw no reason why he went to the spot he was found.

To sum up the jury returned a verdict of Death due to a fracture of the skull.  So the article's heading sums it up to this day 'Pensnett Man's Mysterious Death'.

I got the impression that someone had inferred he'd done it himself although the evidence on site didn't really indicate that.  Perhaps there was a miners strike conspiracy......

Ooh poor chap.

I'm sorry you didn't quite solve the mystery but you got more detail (perhaps too much, lol!)

Thanks for enlightening me, anyway!

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink
