B T on Marrage Certificates

Hello Chris, on some of my earlier Family Marrage notices  are the initials B T (not for the Obvious reasons  I don't think they were around in the 16/1700's) I know they mean Bishops Transcribe, I know what a Bishop is and Represents, I know what  Transcribe Means, but I cannot put the two together and make sense of, I asked my local Bishop recently  and he didn't know either Can you help? thanks Anne 0510.

periodically the incumbent of the parish church had to send 'transcripts' of his set of Registers ( ie summaries of content)  to the next chap up the chain - typically the Bishop.......


dunno what he did with them - sometimes they are OK to use in lieu, but often they lose useful annotations.....

also - contrary to what Anne said in the first message, they were required to be submitted from 1598 to mid 19th century.

Not sure, Newf, some of the equipment and all that  Grin

However, like you,  I'm sure it's referring to the source being from the Bishops Transcripts rather than the Parish Registers.

BISHOPS TRANSCRIPTS (ALSO KNOWN AS PARISH REGISTER TRANSCRIPTS)

From 1598 an annual return was made to the Bishop of a copy of all entries from the Parish Register for that year to about Easter or Lady Day. Some are less good than the originals and some more so. It is recommended that these are checked against the Registers. As they are sometimes copied by a Church Warden they can include more details that the Registers, useful for the family historian.
