Hi Darryl
First of All, a Family Crest or Coat of Arms is granted to one person only - and only that persons heirs are entitled to use it, but each time it is slightly altered by adding 'marks of cadency' (Eldest son - label; second son - crescent; third son - mullet; fourth son - martlet; etc.
If you find a 'Coat of Arms' associated with your family, you are not allowed to use it other than for displaying in your own home. It may not be used on stationary or other items.
Saying that, I have an excellent book "Fairburns Crests" which contains over 30,000 family groups plus some 2000 engraved illustrations and 3800 mottoes translated from Latin and explained.
If you advise the name you are interested in, I will search the Oracle and if a crest appears, will scan it and post it on these boards.

hi Darryl
There are quite a few for Smith, in fact there are over 100 of them - to narrow them down, what part of the country do you believe your brabch of the smith family originated (i.e. where is your earliest ancestor)

Hi Darryl
Out of all those entries - several of which just say 'Smith, England' there is only one connected with Leics.
Smith - Out of a ducal coronet, or, an Indians goats head, ar, eared, sa, beard and attires, gold.
In English that means
Out of a Dukes Coronet, which is Gold, an Indians Goat's Head that is silver or white, Ears that are black, beard and horns that are Gold.
Or - Gold Argent - Silver or White Sable - Black Attires - are the horns.
Will post a picture soon as I have scanned it

Sorry Chris to butt in on your thread Just wanted to note this for bean
Arms are passed from generation to generation, but with distinct changes with every generation
hope that answers your query

James Davies of Moor Court
|
Hi Chris,
You're very talented!!!
Out of interest i do have a description of arms a James Davies was entitled to, if i post a description would it be possible for you to see if there is a picture? He is listed as Davies (Moor Court, co Hereford; as borne by James Davies, Esq. of that place, a magistrate for the county).
Regards Bean
