Jordans of Maidstone
« on: Sunday 03 August 08 11:15 UTC (UK) »

Hi we have a Nicholas Jordan who in about 1663 m Martha possibly Reynolds.

They had several children John,Nicholas  Thomas ,Martha , Samuel and William.

Then in 1682 Martha the mother dies and in 1686 Nicholas seems to remarry a Mary Catlett.

They then have more children with the same names Thomas, Martha and Nicholas.

Is it usual to have 2 children in the same family with the same christian name albeit with different mothers.
It is the same Nicholas as he mentions most of these off spring in his will dated 1724.

Also not all these children have died

Has anyone else come across a similar scenario?

Thanks

Lis

Hi Lis,

First reaction is that it could be son Nicholas who marries in 1686 and then re-uses family names for his children.

Is there any reference in the parish register  to the Nicholas marrying in 1686  as a widower?

The only time I've found names re-used is when a child dies  Undecided

Nanny - Jan

No there was no mention of him being a widower.

I will check again tomorrow when I go to Canterbury.

So far I have only checked the BT's but tomorrow I will go back over the PR's

I thought that the new wife Mary (possibly new wife) would want these names for her children.

Interestingly in the Will of Nich Jorden he refers to his 2 sons that had Martha as a mother as John Rainols and Thomas Rainols but did not mention the name of the mother. But in the register they do not have Rainols as a name, he probably just refered to them in this way to make it easier having doubled up the names.

Maybe tomorrow I will be more enlightened.

This is a big family to untangled!

Thanks

Hi Lis

As in your other reply, I have only come across names re-used when the child of that name had died.

'My' Jordans have only taken me as far back as about 1780, and the connections so far are with Herne, Whitstable and possibly Tenterden .

Yes I think there may be a link to Tenterden but have not had the chance to view the records.

Hope to go to Maidstone one day and check there.

Regards

Lis,

As he refers to 2 sons as "Rainols";  perhaps he never married Martha or they were possibly her children from an earlier marriage.

They don't make it easy for us do they!   Cheesy

Hi again Lis

Do let me know if you find out anything about Tenterden Jordans. My ancestor John Jordan was supposedly born there tho I have found nothing on the transcibed parish register to which I have access.

Best wishes
