Daniel Bruce & Mary Ann Kennedy
« on: Sunday 03 August 08 17:34 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Looking for more information about:

Daniel Bruce, Sr.
b. abt 1825 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland
s/o Margaret Kennedy
buried 09 May 1906 in the Presbyterian Section of the Williamstown Cemetery in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia – Plot: PRES C 17 003

Daniel appears in the 1841 Scottish Census for Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland.  He is 15-yrs old and an apprentice blacksmith to Thomas Cleland in whose home he lived. At Wellstrand, in Denny.  The census also notes that Daniel was born in Denny.

He married on 4 Dec 1846 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland:

Mary Ann Kennedy
b. 24 Aug 1826 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland
d/o John Eddie Kennedy & Jean Burns
buried 28 Mar 1910 in the Presbyterian Section of the Williamstown Cemetery in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia – Plot: PRES C 17 003

In the 1851 Census, Daniel and Mary Ann live at 43 Castle Street in Galsgow.  He is working as a Blacksmith.  Daniel is 26 and Mary Ann is 22-yrs old.  They had two children – 3-yr old William (b. abt 1849) and 10 month old Jane (b. 1850).

On 3 Sept 1852, Daniel arrived in Geelong, Australia on board the Bourneup (Bourneuf).  He was 26-yrs old.   The Bourneup sailed from Liverpool.  It was a 1495 ton clipper under the hand of Master Robert Biddy.   It appears possible that Daniel was one of the thousands of miners who flooded the Ballarat gold fields.  Certainly as a blacksmith he would have found ample employment there…

I am hoping that someone might have come across Daniel in the course of their research into the Bruce family - we are trying to see if his mother Margaret Kennedy is related to his wife Mary Ann Kennedy.

My thanks for any help you can give.

Researching the descendants of John Eddie Kennedy & Jean Burns of Falkirk, Denny and Kilsyth.  They were married 15 Feb 1822 in Cumbernault, Dunbarton, Scotland.  They had 12 children - 4 died young, 2 followed their husbands to Australia and 6 came to Canada with them in 1852/3.  Any help at all is appreciated.  Thanks!
