1861 l/u, please - Denton
« on: Monday 04 August 08 00:13 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for the Denton family in 1861.

Mercy Denton (b1841 Whitkirk) married Mark Sheldon in 1870 at the Hunslet District Registered Building.

William Denton (b1844 Whitkirk) married Ann Sheldon in 1866 at St Mary the Virgin Hunslet

Mark and Ann Sheldon were siblings. I wonder whether Mercy and William were also siblings.
The 1861 census might provide the evidence.

Thanks for any help,

Hi PeterB,

It's a possibility.  Haven't found Mercy in 1861, but in 1851 she was a visitor with the Schofield family.  In 1861 the Denton family including William had Elizabeth Schofield, mother-in-law,  living with them.

Not conclusive, they perhaps could have been cousins?

Full census details follow

Think this is Mercy in 1861 indexed as Mary but looks like Mercy on image:

1861 RG9/2683  Folio  74  Page  21
25 Cambridge St, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool
in household of Elizabeth C. Neilson
Mercy Denton  servant 19  Cook    Colton, Yorkshire

The only way to prove the link would be to get her birth cert, and William's, or both marriage certs to find if fathers' names are the same

Thanks for that info, Barbara.

I have just had a look for Denton births reg. in Whitkirk on YorkshireBMD and found

1840   DENTON   David Schofield   Whitkirk WHIT/1/259
1841   DENTON   Mercy   Whitkirk WHIT/1/458
1844   DENTON   Mercy   Whitkirk WHIT/1/458?Huh?

1844   DENTON   William   Whitkirk WHIT/2/216
1845   DENTON   Sarah Helen Whitkirk WHIT/2/423
1846   DENTON   Joseph Schofield Whitkirk WHIT/2/476
1849   DENTON   George   Whitkirk WHIT/3/296
1851   DENTON   Elizabeth Schofield Whitkirk WHIT/4/46
1853   DENTON   Mary Ann Whitkirk WHIT/4/341
1854   DENTON   John Whitkirk WHIT/5/69
1857   DENTON   Robert Ordsley Whitkirk WHIT/5/429
1859   DENTON   Benjamin Whitkirk WHIT/6/244

Only Mercy and Sarah Helen are missing from the John and Elizabeth's  family in 1861. It doesn't leave a lot of scope for another Denton family.

Mercy was born Nov 1841 at Colton.  I do not have her death yet but she and Mark Sheldon had
1871 Leeds Theresa
1873   "       Harry
1876    "      Raymond
1878     "     Louisa
1881    "     Lillian Cynthia
1883    "    Frank
1886    "    Arthur
Have all the census returns but 1901 for her and have most of the Denton family birth certificates.
Mercy's parents were John Denton born 27 Jan 1816 Stanley, Wakefield died 8 Dec 1861 Halton.  Elizabeth Schofield born abt 1820 Whitkirk died 1882 at 10 Church street Barnsley.  They married 19 Nov 1838 in Batley.
Mercy's siblings:
David Schofield Denton 11 Feb 1840 - 1911 and married Mary Elizabeth Snell.
William Denton 27 Jan 1844 Whitkirk - 18 July 1902 Carlisle (my gggrandfather) married Ann Sheldon
Joseph Schofield Denton 25 Feb 1846 Halton - ? married Elizabeth A Beaumont.
George Denton 17 Jan 1849 Whitkirk - 1906 Gt Ousburn, married Amelia Snell.
Elizabeth Schofield Denton 5 Jan 1851 Whitkirk - believe she married and moved to London.
Mary Ann Denton 1853 Hunslet - ?
John Denton 13 Nov 1854 Whitkirk (was in hospital as a patient on one census)  Married Louisa Keighley, do not think they had children.
Robt Audsley Denton 20 Apr 1858 Whitkirk - 16 Aug Winnington Cheshire, married Bathia Snell 1859-1936.
Benjamin Schofield Denton 1859 - Aug 1916 9b  591 age 57.  Married Mary Elizabeth ?
Am just waiting for a few more certificates.
Hope this helps.

Hi Barbara
Are you a Denton or Sheldon?
I am most interested to know Peter B's connection because if he is a Denton in Australia I have just had a visit from an Australian distant cousin, we met thru the ancestry site.  She is the great grandaughter of George Denton 1849-1906.  Her grandfather Herbert worked as a surveyor or something for the railways in York and died here.  Her father Norman went out to New Zealand to work building some railways as a platelayer and then they moved to Australia.  She was brought up in Adelaide but now lives in Darwin.
She is currently cruising the Med.  All done in a mad dash.  They come from Australia and think UK and Europe so small they can do it in a flash.

Hi Brenda,

How interesting, I particularly like the 'doing Europe in a flash'   Smiley

I'm not connected to your family at all, like many Rootschatters on this site just doing look-ups for other people.  I think PeterB does live in Australia, so hope he gets in touch with you when he comes back online.

All the best,

Brenda,

Welcome to Rootschat.
I am related to the Sheldons. Mark and Ann Sheldon's mother was Elizabeth Stringer 1816-1900
Elizabeth's parents were:

Jonas Stringer 1791-1858
Martha Drewry 1794-1856

Jonas and Martha were my 3xGGrandparents thru' Thomas Stringer 1824-1897 to my paternal grandmother.

Whoops, my message has gone only half written.  Anyway, just in case you do not get it...

Yes William 1844-1902 and Mercy were siblings.  Mercy's birth is down on registry as 1841 Leeds OND   23   446.

I note that she and Mark lived in Stavely, Derbyshire and Brandscliffe Dewsbury for a time as some of their children were born there.

Also, if you cannot find Mark Sheldon on the 1871 census he is in Hammersmith London as a visitor on RG10/57  page 37.

Try a site called www.leodis.net for old photos of Leeds before they demolished the slums.

Brenda,

I have Mercy's birth regs. as

b. q/e December 1841 Leeds 23 434 (FreeBMD)
b. 1841 Whitkirk WHIT/1/458 (YorkshireBMD)

I see there is a Samuel Denton reg. Leeds 23 446

Thanks for Mark's 1871 details, I did have them.

I use the Leodis site extensively

Thanks again,

Hi
I did not know about the Samuel Denton what year was he and have you got the certificate?
I am in the process of breaking down each family into their own folders as I have so much info it gets confusing.  To top it all I had the window open the other day and paper blew everywhere.  The next time I enter my office I am going to come in on hands and knees and shred a bit of it.

Brenda,

My reference to Samuel was because you wrote

"Mercy's birth is down on registry as 1841 Leeds OND   23   446. "

whereas I responded

"I have Mercy's birth regs. as

b. q/e December 1841 Leeds 23 434 (FreeBMD)
b. 1841 Whitkirk WHIT/1/458 (YorkshireBMD)"

So I checked Leeds 23 446 and found Samuel. I don't know if you looked up Denton Births and misread Samuel's reg for Mercy's

Sorry about the confusion.
