I'm looking for the Denton family in 1861.

Mercy Denton (b1841 Whitkirk) married Mark Sheldon in 1870 at the Hunslet District Registered Building.

William Denton (b1844 Whitkirk) married Ann Sheldon in 1866 at St Mary the Virgin Hunslet

Mark and Ann Sheldon were siblings. I wonder whether Mercy and William were also siblings.
The 1861 census might provide the evidence.

Thanks for any help,

PeterB

I belive that these Dentons are in my family as my great great great grandad is john denton b1816 and Elizabeth schofield b1820 and they married 19/04/1838 in whitkirk i have traced the Dentons and the Scholfields back to the 15/16th century.

I am off sprung from Joseph Schofield Denton b1846 who married an Elizabeth Ann Raper b1846 from theese two i have all the relations downwards.

I would love to get more details about Joseph Schofield Dentons siblings.

I have loads of details at home. If you would like to contact me reply to this message

Many thanks

Hi,
I stumbled across rootschat and was delighted to see the names of my relatives the "Denton's".  My dad's sister was named Bathia, after Bathia Snell. Would love to hear how you are related.
Thanks

Hi Bev,

You can see how Brenda, Paul and I are related to this Denton family in this thread. How are you related?

Hi Peter,
So great to hear from you..My grandfather, Albert b. 31/5/1889  is one of the 10 children of Robert Ordsley Denton b. 20/4/1857 Whitkirk and Bathia Snell b. 22/1/1859. Albert and wife Mary had 7 children - one being my dad, David Denton b. 23/1/1927. One of dad's sisters was named Bathia after her grandmother, Bathia Snell. Sounds like Paul is of a similar thread?

Hope that makes sense, I'm new to this.
Cheers

Hi again

I have had a look at the paperwork I have, courtesy of Andrew Denton from Lancashire and Paul Denton and I share the same Great, Great Grandparents - John Denton and Elizabeth Schofield. Joseph Schofield Denton and Robert Ordsley Denton were brothers.

Bev,

It's gratifying to see that this post has helped you find your extended family. As you can see, I was interested to see whether my Sheldon siblings married Denton siblings. It appears that I have my answer. The bonus is that you and Paul have made contact and can share information about the Dentons.

This is essentially what RootsChat is about. I have has a number of similar experiences on this site and it is what makes RootsChat so unique and worthwhile.

Hey Peter

The paperwork that I am reading off has Mary Denton bp 18.10.1835 (?) in Hunslett, as marrying a Sheldon.

If this is the case, you and I also have the same connection, with Mary, Joseph and Robert being siblings. Have I got that right?

I also have:
David     bp 22-3-1840
Mercy     bp 23.1.1842
William   bp 28-4-1844

Bev,

What I have is

John Sheldon (1816-1888) married Elizabeth Stringer (1816-1900) on 10/8/1835 at Rothwell Yorkshire England (IGI Batch M010612)

The Sheldon children

Mary (ba. 6/9/1835 Rothwell Yorkshire (IGI C010612))
Fred ??
Mark (b. q/e December 1839 Leeds 23 418 & b. 1839 Rothwell ROTH/1/394 d. 1909) married Mercy Denton (b. q/e December 1841 Leeds 23 434 & b. 1841 Whitkirk WHIT/1/458)
George (b. q/e June 1842 Leeds 23 453 & b. 1842 Rothwell ROTH/2/434 d. 1924) married Hannah Foster
Joseph (b. q/e March 1846 Hunslet 23 311 & b. 1846 Hunslet HUNS/11/471 d. 1911) married Jane Ann Gibson
Ann (b. q/e September 1848 Hunslet 23 ** & b. 1848 Hunslet HUN/15/314) married William Denton (b. q/e March 1844 Leeds 23 466 &
b. 1844 Whitkirk WHIT/2/216)
Edward (b. q/e December 1850 Hunslet 23 336 & b. 1850 Hunslet HUNS/19/58 d. 1897) married Sarah Ann Nicholson

I can't see a marriage of Mary Denton here, unless she married Fred
I haven't looked into the Denton family in detail as I am more interested in the Stringers.

As you can see, I am from SA.

Hi,

Please bear with me as I am a new member!  I see that you have connections to the Sheldon family from Hunslet Yorkshire.  A Walter Sheldon was mentioned.  I think this could be my Grandfather....I was wondering if you got any further with your Sheldon information and would be willing to share it with me if so.      Many thanks,

Barbara

Hello Barbara (another one - must be something about this family research!)

Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

I'm sure all the Sheldon contributors on this thread (offline at the moment) will be very pleased to contact you and share family information.  I can't at the moment see where a Walter was mentioned, but if he came from Hunslet the others may see a connection.

If there's anything you need help with, please do ask, you can start a new post on the lookup boards any time, and someone will try to help you.  It might be as well to start a Sheldon post as this one is headed "Denton"

Kind regards
