Any Ideas Please??
« on: Tuesday 25 January 05 21:27 UTC (UK) »

I have found an ancestor's wedding recorded in Earsdon, Northumberland in 1803.  I cannot find any record of the grooms birth.  Audrey has kindly looked for births for people with this name and come up with two possibles - one in 1781 one in 1778, both in Westmorland.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can go to verify if one (or either) of them are the person Im looking for?

The details are - John Addison m 1/10/1803 to Mary Reed in earsdon.  The two candidates are - John bn 22/01/1781 in Haversham, westmorland or John bn 01/05/1778 in Westmorland.

Any advice would be gladly welcomed!

Thanks

Sharon,

Did you get the Addison/Reed marriage details from an index transcribed from the Earsdon Parish register or from the church register itself ?

Some clergy annotated the registers with extra detail

eg "notp" meaning "native of this parish" or with info on the person's "home" parish.

And transcribers did not bring this detail forward.

By the way.....

Northumberland Marriage Index (1813-1837)
Newcastle St Nicholas's... marriage 13/Nov/1825
John Addison .. Hannah Topping.

Michael

I got the information from the microfilm of the church registers, although at that time they were basically a list of names, rather than any detail with them.
Not sure who the next John is marrying Hannah Topping, as Johns son, John, married Alice wyatt.  I'll note it down anyway - you know how these things link together at some point!

Thanks

Sharon,

I was looking in " Earsdon Bapt/Marr/Burr 1813-1839"
parish records indexes ( Newcastle Library) today.

Probably the same batch you have already seen ?

i.e. 10 baptisms, 1 marriage (John Read Addison - Alice Nott 26/6/1831) and 2 burrials.

yes - proabably the same record, at the Discovery Museum.  I have found alice Nott sometimes referred to as Alice Wyatt - I know Nott is a family name (my grandfathers middle name).  The records werent too easy to read !

Thanks

If you can find a baptism for their children in early 1800s it will give the place of origin of both parents.  The Bishop of the time demanded full records.

Baptism records for a short time were as follows

Name, date of baptism, date of birth, first son of XX, occupation, native of the parish of xxx, by his wife YY, native of the parish of ...
