John PUNNET
 Mother's Name Jane FROST
 Parish Heathfield All Saints
Notes John PUNNET base son Jane FROST

&

burial
 John PUNNET 1 May 1790
 Notes base son Jane FROST
Yard Heathfield All Saints

now in 1783 Samuel Punnett (b. 1747) moved to Punnetts Town  followed by his father James (b/1714) in 1784

thus at the time of 1790 the only Punnetts in Punnetts Town were:~
James b. 1714 Hooe St Oswalds
Samuel b. 1747 Heathfield probably
Sarah Samuels sister no y.o.b but probably 1748-1775!
and then Samuels children who were all bp. Heathfield All Saints, this was the nearest parish church to Punnetts Town
Ann 18.12.1768 (m. Hezekiah Excell)
Samuel 14.10.1770 bur. 07.03.1771
Elizabeth 05.04.1772 (poss. m. Thomas Cole)
Mary 30.01.1774 (had an illigitmate child by Mr Blundle)
James 01.09.1776
Phila 10.02.1782 (m. John Hewings, Phila died 1852)
Samuel 1785. (m. Elizabeth Luck Samuel d.28.11.1866)

and also this may or may not be relevant:~

Samuel, meanwhile had obtained a grant of five acres of unenclosed land on the North Side of Frost Lane, on which he built the house known as Little Home Farm, before selling that and his half or the North Street Cottages to William Wilmshurst jnr in 1789.
(this means betwixt 1783 & 1789)


so out of these people who do you think is the father

there is not a marriage for a Mr Punnett to Jane Frost on the SMI at a later date ??

James Punnett 1739 brother to Samuel 1747 set up home in Burwash
as did his sister Hannah, she had an illigitmate child William Punnett in 1764
but all this occured in Burwash and obviously the female line can not be the father of John Punnett

William Punnett b. 1743 i have not tracked his movements - he is also the brother of Samuel 1747
he is not mentioned in the Punnetts Town book, and thus i do not think he came over this way

other than these two Samuel 1747 had sisters

Samuel b. 1785 could not have ben the father of a child b. 1790
so that leaves
James b. 1714. Samuel b. 1747 and James b. 1776 although the latter would have been only just turned 14

any suggestions?

Just a quick note, I note you say that Heathfield All Saints is closest church to Punnetts Town.  that's not actually true, Warbleton is closer and Punnetts Town is in the Warbleton parish.  The Heathfield Chapel is within the parish despite it being called the Heathfield Chapel  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

do you mean the Independent Chapel? is that the one at Cade Street?
when did that come into being?
someone told me it was erected shortly after Punnetts Town cameinto existence, not sure how true that is,  otherwise the people would have a long walk to church and probably only went there for Christenings, Marriages and burials  - like we do now i suppose,
when the Heathfeld chapel was built people went there for readings as many couldn't read themselves, thus the congregation grew so it was a sort of entertainment - thats not to take anything away from those that go to church for religous reasons

so if the Heathfied Chapel was not around then All Saints would be the closest ?  Undecided

http://bbook_bg.home.att.net/Poet/PP014.html  The thought is that apparently Cade Street Independent or Heathfield Chapel was built around 1769, certainly the style of the building looks about right for that period.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin at Warbleton dates back to the 13th century so I think it predates the Heathfield Chapel.

http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SSX/Warbleton/ParishMap.php  The boundary of the Heathfield/Warbleton parish crosses Punnetts Town so perhaps there was some discretion.

ooo Richard Lower, much later on a Lower married a Punnett hold i i will find it :~

Agnes Kezia Ann Punnett m. Henry Lower Q3 1874 Ticehurst

Agnes b.1854 was the dau. of Samuel b. 1809 who was in turn the son of Sameul b . 1785 back further we have Samue 1747 and tehn James b.1714
Agnes died in 1923

so the chapel was in existence before the 'town'
why wasn't any of Samuel b. 1747 children bp. there, rather than All Saints ?

Hi Toni

I am presuming that you have checked for bastardy orders etc.  You'll be lucky if a baptism at that stage shows a reputed father but you never know.  If nobody is going to Lewes sooner, I should be going sometime in the summer.  I'm collecting a few lookups that I need to do.

i saw some reputed fathers on the Hooe / Ninfield fiche i was looking at last Thursday but as they didnt belong to me i didnt make notes of them but they were quite early so fingers crossed  Smiley
